Conditions for renewing or replacing a PR card:

You must meet the following conditions:

  1. Residency status: Maintain valid Permanent Resident status in Canada.
  2. Residency obligation: Typically, you must meet the 730-day requirement within the 5-year assessment period. If you have been a PR for less than 5 years, you must demonstrate the ability to meet the 730-day requirement in the first 5 years from the date you became a PR. Some days spent outside Canada may be counted, but they must meet specific criteria; simply accompanying any Canadian citizen relative or working for any Canadian company does not automatically count.
  3. Reason for renewal/replacement: The PR Card is lost, damaged, expired, or you have had a change in personal information (e.g., a name change).
  4. No violation of PR conditions: You have not violated residency obligations or engaged in illegal activities that affect your PR status.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Does an expired PR card mean losing permanent residency? When should I renew?

PR cards are usually valid for 5 years, sometimes 1 year. An expired card does not automatically result in the loss of permanent resident status. Typically, you can apply for a new card when your current one has less than 9 months of validity remaining or has already expired. PR holders must meet the residency obligation, generally 730 days in 5 years, with some exceptions.

Are you in Canada or outside Canada?

An expired PR card does not automatically cause the loss of PR status. The renewal/replacement process must follow IRCC conditions while in Canada. If you are outside Canada without a valid card and wish to return via a commercial carrier, you must check the separate PRTD (Permanent Resident Travel Document) procedure.

If you rely on time spent outside Canada or are at risk of not meeting the residency obligation, you need an authorized representative to review your evidence before submitting.
