Owner-Operator LMIA Program
This program ran until April 1, 2021, after which it stopped accepting applications. Applications submitted before this date will still be considered.
The Owner-Operator LMIA is just one of many programs that allow business owners to operate businesses in Canada. Previously, the program could help business owners earn 200 CRS points in Express Entry. However, it is no longer the ideal program to achieve this.
Standard LMIA
Business owners in Canada can also apply for a Work Permit with an LMIA for their employees. The standard procedure is that the business first needs to apply for an LMIA for the position they are hiring for, and once they receive approval, they can apply for a work permit.
What about business owners who are already in Canada under the Owner-Operator LMIA program?
Service Canada has not announced any plans or intentions to transfer ownership of businesses currently based in Canada under the program. Owner-Operator LMIA. Unless otherwise stated, this new decision will not apply retroactively, meaning valid LMIAs will remain in effect until their expiration. What you will need to pay attention to are LMIA extensions and renewals.
The program offers many benefits. Below are just a few of them:
- Living and working in Canada: You and your family can live and work in Canada.
- Send your children to Canadian public schools: Your child can attend public secondary schools in Canada for free.
- English/French language skills are not required. You can obtain a work permit to work in Canada without having to prove your knowledge of English or French. A minimum of one year of management experience is required for management positions.
- Access to free healthcare services: You will be eligible for free health insurance in Canada.
- You may still reside in your home country: You are not required to reside full-time in Canada and can continue your business in the country.
- Business opportunities: You will have access to the Canadian and US markets for business expansion, a safe and stable banking system, funding sources, and business opportunities.
- Permanent residents: You will be eligible to apply for Canadian permanent residency, and after living in Canada for 3 years as a permanent resident, you can apply for Canadian citizenship and obtain one of the most coveted passports in the world.
- Bringing workers over from your country: You can bring key workers from your country to work for your company in Canada.
