If you are in Canada as a tourist, but for some reason are unable to leave Canada on time, you can extend your stay by applying for a Visitor Record.
What is a visitor record?
- a document that gives you visitor status in Canada and allows you to stay longer
- includes a new expiry date, which is the final date by which you must leave Canada
When to apply for a visitor record?
You must apply for a visitor record before your current authorized stay expires. If you do not know when your authorized stay expires, you can check this link.
Leaving and returning to Canada
A Visitor Record allows you to stay longer, but it is not a travel document that allows you to leave and re-enter Canada.
If you plan to leave Canada, you will need a valid travel document, such as a visitor visa or eTA, to return to Canada.
Who can apply for a visitor record?
A visitor record is for those who want to
- extend their stay in Canada as a visitor, or
- change their permit type from
- study permit to visitor record
- work permit to visitor record
When to apply?
You should apply at least 30 days before your current status expires.
The expiry date for your status is
- the date stamped in your passport (this is NOT the date shown on your visitor visa)
- if you do not have a stamp in your passport, the expiry date is 6 months from the date you entered Canada
- your study permit
- your work permit, or
- your visitor record (if you have previously applied for one)
The following documents are required:
- Scanned or clearly photographed as a scan
- If a translation is provided, it must be scanned as a complete set: the Vietnamese copy must be stapled or joined with the translation
- If a translation is not yet available, the original document must be scanned in color for translation by the service provider
- Passport valid for at least 6 months: scan all pages containing personal information, visas, and customs stamps from any country
- Digital photo: taken within the last 6 months, can be taken with a phone against a white wall, no smiling, no glasses, and no headgear

Financial proof: bank statements from a Canadian bank, or a savings book from Vietnam in the applicant's name
- If you have relatives (child, spouse) in Canada: Study permit, PR card, or Canadian Passport
