The school was named after St. Francis Xavier (1506-1552), a Jesuit missionary. The school began in September 1990 in a temporary site. As part of the Dufferin Peel portable replacement plan, the school received a three-floor, twenty-two room addition. The project was completed in June of 2001. Currently, the school is home to almost 2000 students with more than 100 instructional staff, support staff, and a childcare centre.
The Mission of St. Francis Xavier Secondary School, in partnership with the family and church, is to provide, in a responsible manner, a Catholic education which develops spiritual, intellectual, aesthetic, emotional, social, and physical capabilities of each individual to live fully today and to meet the challenges of the future, thus enriching the community.
St. Francis Xavier Secondary School teaches students necessary life skills and prepares them for post-secondary education, the workplace, and for their role as responsible citizens. The school population is very culturally diverse, with over 70 different ethnic nationalities represented. Its strength is in its diversity as we are all "'Citizens of the World."
