Newsletter: Update on Off-Campus Work Policy for International Students

On December 7, 2023, the Minister announced two important notices regarding off-campus work for international students. Accordingly, these temporary public policies will exempt eligible full-time international students from working more than 20 hours per week off-campus during official semesters, as they would otherwise not require a work permit.

The temporary public policy on off-campus work hours, initially announced on October 7, 2022, is in effect from November 15, 2022, until April 30, 2024. Previously, this policy was set to expire on December 31, 2023. This temporary policy allows some students to work off-campus for more than 20 hours per week during the academic term, provided that IRCC receives their study permit application on or before October 7, 2022.

A new temporary public policy on off-campus work hours will take effect on January 1, 2024, and will also be in effect until April 30, 2024. This new temporary policy will allow some students to work off-campus for more than 20 hours per week during the academic term , if IRCC receives their study permit application between October 8, 2022, and December 7, 2023.
