What is Express Entry?
Express Entry is Canada's fastest and most popular immigration pathway. The Express Entry system manages applications through three main programs:
- Federal Skilled Worker (FSW) Program
- Federal Skilled Trades (FST) Program
- Canadian Experience Class (CEC)
Applicants must meet the requirements of one of these three programs to submit an application to the Express Entry pool.
Once in the pool, Express Entry candidates are ranked and scored by the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS). Every two weeks, the government holds an Express Entry draw, inviting the highest-scoring candidates to apply for Canadian permanent residency.
The standard service processing time for Express Entry applications is just 6 months. Despite delays due to the pandemic, IRCC expects to return to this standard by July 2022.
How do I get invited through the PNP Express Entry draw?
Each Canadian province and territory (except Quebec and Nunavut) operates its own nomination programs. Each nominated program has distinct eligibility requirements; while many require a connection to the province to apply (work experience, job offer, family members, or education in the province), there are also programs for overseas workers who have no connection to Canada.
Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs) that align with the Express Entry system allow applicants to apply for permanent residency through a fast-track process. Many of these programs also accept Express Entry profiles and invite applications based on their skills or work experience.
Candidates who receive nominations through the Express Entry PNP receive an additional 600 CRS points. These additional points essentially guarantee an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residency.
Before receiving the nomination, the lowest-ranked candidate in this draw had a CRS score of only 196.
FSW and CEC draws
The Canadian government announced in April 2022 that the FSW and CEC draws would resume in early July 2022.
If you are planning to immigrate to Canada, you should start the Express Entry process immediately. Preparing the necessary documents for an Express Entry profile can be a lengthy process. With the FSW and CEC draws soon to resume, start now to ensure you don't miss an opportunity.
