From July 1, 2022, Vietnam began issuing new-style ordinary passports.

Vietnamese citizens residing in Vietnam and those living abroad will begin receiving the new non-chip ordinary passport starting July 1, 2022.

Accordingly, the new ordinary passport template is implemented in accordance with Circular No. 73/2021/TT-BCA dated June 29, 2021, which regulates the templates for passports, travel documents, and related forms.

Compared to the old model, the new ordinary passport has many improvements. The new passport is elaborately designed, with each page featuring representative images of landscapes, symbols of national sovereignty, and famous cultural heritage sites of the country such as: Ha Long Bay, Hue Imperial City, Hung Temple, Hoi An Ancient Town, My Son Sanctuary, Nha Rong Port, Lung Cu Flagpole, To Vo Arch - Ly Son Island… contributing to affirming and promoting images of Vietnam to the world, showcasing Vietnam's traditions, history, geography, and culture.

The new standard passport design incorporates security features that make it difficult to counterfeit.

Citizens who were issued old-style passports before July 1, 2022, will continue to use them until their expiration date. Old-style passports issued after July 1, 2022, will be invalid.

Vietnam has sent the new mẫu of diplomatic, official, and ordinary passports without electronic chips to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for notification to Vietnamese representative offices abroad, competent foreign authorities, and relevant international agencies and organizations.

For diplomatic, official, and ordinary passports without electronic chips, Vietnam plans to issue them to citizens in the third quarter of 2022.
