Work Permit for those who recently applied for PR programs.
Today, the Minister for Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, Marco EL Mendicino, announced that, starting July 26, 2021, those who have applied for permanent residency (PR) under the recently introduced programs will be eligible for an Open Work Permit while awaiting the outcome of their application.
Recently, a program opened up for international graduates, healthcare workers, and essential workers to apply for PR on May 6, 2021. To be eligible for this program, individuals must be legally employed in Canada at the time of application and maintain temporary resident status until a decision is made on their permanent residency application.
Many of these individuals may have expired residency status, and they may be able to renew their work permits.
Many people whose status is about to expire can renew their work permits under existing programs, or under one of the temporary measures implemented as a consequence of the pandemic, such as public policy for those holding work permits after graduation.
To be eligible for the upcoming work permit program (single application), applicants must:
- The PR application for one of these new programs has been successfully submitted.
- Do you have a valid work permit, or are permitted to work without a work permit, at the time of applying for PR?
- I have a valid work permit that expires within the next four months.
- Having temporary resident status, maintaining resident status, or being eligible for reinstatement of resident status at the time of applying for PR.
- In Canada while applying for a Work Permit.
- Employed in any job at the time of applying for PR.
- Meet the language requirements (English/French) as per the submitted PR program.
