5 steps to studying in Canada

Are you interested in studying in Canada, but don't know where to start?

Here are five simple steps you can follow to make your dreams come true.

Step 1: Find a world-class school or program.

At KeyApply.com, you can find information to help you decide which world-class Canadian school and program to study at. Our website features information on elementary schools, secondary schools, colleges and universities, and language schools.

Before choosing a school, think about where you'd like to live during your studies. Do you prefer small, friendly rural communities or vibrant big cities? Or somewhere that offers both?

Once you know of a school or program you're interested in, please contact us for more information about the program and its admission requirements. Each province and each school in Canada has its own admission requirements.

Step 2: Create a budget and figure out how to pay for your education.

Studying in Canada is a sensible choice. Tuition fees at colleges and universities are generally lower than in Australia, the UK, and the US.

You can use our search tool to find and compare tuition and living costs for various college and university programs across Canada. Depending on where you choose to study, your costs will vary. To help prepare your budget, use the search tool to get cost estimates for:

  • Food
  • Housing
  • Travel
  • Health insurance

There are many different ways to financially support your studies, such as:

  • Scholarships and grants from universities are available for outstanding students.
  • Working while studying
  • Support from parents or family

Step 3: Submit your application to the school.

When applying to your chosen school, be sure to provide accurate information and the required documents. Your school will tell you what documents you need and the next steps to follow.

Remember that application fees will vary from school to school.

The school or a designated third party may verify your credentials and qualifications. You may be asked to provide documents such as:

  • Academic Report
  • Scoreboard
  • Study information

Step 4: Submit your application for studying in Canada.

When the school sends you your acceptance letter, you will need to find out:

  • Do you need a study permit from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC)?
  • You can get your study permit faster through the Student Direct Stream (SDS).
  • How to prepare your application and register online with IRCC

Note: If you are studying in Quebec, you may need to obtain an Acceptance Certificate from the Quebec government before you can apply for a study permit.

After IRCC approves your application, they will ask you to submit your passport. They will then send you your student visa, along with a letter of recommendation.

When you arrive in Canada, bring this letter and present it to a Canada Border Services officer. If your application is approved, the officer will issue you a study permit.

Step 5: Get ready to go to Canada

Canada looks forward to welcoming you! Now, prepare for your journey:

  • Arrange housing and accommodation.
  • Find out what type of travel and health insurance you need.
  • Book your flight and find out about baggage limits and customs regulations.
  • Carry a small amount of cash in CAD or USD.

Make sure you have all the necessary documents with you, such as:

  • Acceptance letter from the school
  • Medical and vaccination records
  • Any documents that your school requires you to bring.
