Which Canadian immigration program is right for me?
With so much information available about immigrating to Canada, deciding which program to follow has become quite challenging for families making a decision.
Our advice: You should choose based on the following three criteria.
BEST FIT: The search criteria should be based on the most suitable program , not the cheapest. Suitability leads to the highest success rate, while the cheapest doesn't guarantee success!
DIRECT APPLICATION FOR PR: Prioritize the Permanent Resident (PR) application program. Avoid temporary visa programs such as Student, Work, or Tourist visas. Temporary visas lack a guaranteed pathway and increase the risk of delays.
FEDERAL vs. PROVINCIAL : Federal programs should be prioritized. Provincial programs should be avoided because the application process, which includes a provincial stage, takes longer and makes it more difficult to choose a desired place to live. Additionally, federal programs offer greater stability, are less prone to changes, or usually provide advance notice of changes. Provincial programs are more prone to changes.
Find a suitable entrepreneurship and investment program.
If you want to come to Canada, there are several options available to you as an entrepreneur. Here are three of the most popular immigration programs for foreign entrepreneurs.
Option 1: Work Permit Program for Entrepreneurs
The Entrepreneur Work Permit Program is designed for self-employed individuals and entrepreneurs who wish to come to Canada to start and operate a business. To apply for this program, entrepreneurs must own at least 50% of a business in Canada and present a business idea (or business plan), explaining how their business will contribute to the Canadian economy and create jobs for Canadian citizens and residents.
Specifically, candidates should focus on the following questions in their business plan:
- Why is this business plan viable, and what benefits will it create for Canadians?
- How many job opportunities will the business create for Canadians?
- Will businesses improve/increase exports of Canadian products/services?
- Will there be any technological advancements or other progress in Canadian industry through the introduction of innovation, differentiation, or skill enhancement?
- Will the business contribute to the development of a local or remote community?
- The business will offer a unique service or sell unique products.
The initial work permit for operating a business in Canada will be issued for two years and can be renewed if the company continues to operate actively. Entrepreneurs will have the opportunity to apply for permanent residency after operating their business for at least one year in Canada, provided they meet all the requirements for permanent residency.
Option 2: Start-Up Visa Program
Start-Up Visa Program This is a federal program designed to attract skilled and promising entrepreneurs to build innovative businesses in Canada that can compete globally. The program offers permanent residency to the founding partners of a startup company.
To apply for the Startup Visa Program, a business idea must first receive support from one or more Designated Organizations approved by immigration authorities in Canada. There are three types of designated organizations:
Each designated organization has its own application process and evaluation criteria. Venture capital firms must secure a commitment of CAD $200,000. Angel investors commit CAD $75,000 (or more). Applicants do not need to receive financial investment from a startup incubator, but they must be accepted into an accredited startup incubator program in Canada.
Please note that designated organizations receive thousands of applications for support, and it is not easy to obtain investment or support from a designated organization.
Designated organizations tend to prefer investing in startups focused on information technology, clean technology, biotechnology, software, and products or services with higher growth potential rather than traditional businesses. In the short term, there must be some novelty to your business.
Additionally, remember that designated organizations often require more than just an idea , and you need to demonstrate that you have customers. If you have nothing more than an idea, you can still try your luck with an incubator program. It might work if your idea is validated, fully developed, and a good fit for your skill level and experience.
Option 3: Provincial Entrepreneur Programs
If you are an experienced, high-net-worth entrepreneur looking to invest in and actively manage your businesses in Canada, the PNP Entrepreneur Immigration Program may offer you a pathway toward permanent residency in Canada.
Each province in Canada has different investment criteria and evaluation standards, so you will need to verify eligibility with the specific province. To apply, you need to develop a detailed business plan explaining the type of business you intend to buy or establish and include financial projections demonstrating how your purchase or establishment will benefit the local economy and the labor market in general.
Overall, the registration process is divided into 6 stages:
- Express your interest - register your interest with your chosen province and describe your business concept and investment plans.
- Invitation to Apply - If your score is sufficient, the province will invite you to submit an application including verifications of your actual property value and necessary documentation.
- Interview - once you meet the eligibility criteria, you will have an interview with the local immigration agency to discuss your business plan and commitment.
- Performance & Enforcement Agreement – you will need to sign a Performance Agreement with provincial authorities outlining the details of the required investment amount, hiring plan, and proactive management of your business. You will then also receive a work permit to begin implementing your business plan, including investing the committed funds in your business and creating jobs for Canadians.
- Nomination - After you have fulfilled the terms of your implementation agreement, you may apply for Permanent Residency Nomination to the provincial government.
- PR Application - After receiving your Provincial Nomination Letter, you can apply for permanent residency with the Federal immigration authorities.
Ultimately, the most important thing is not to wait and let time go to waste. Start working on your immigration application now to secure your ticket to an unpredictable future!
