Success story: The whole family received COPR – from Work Permit to Canadian permanent residency

The whole family receives COPR – from Work Permit to Canadian permanent resident

For many families living in Canada on temporary resident permits, the greatest wish is not just to continue working or studying, but to obtain permanent resident status to build a stable, long-term life. This story is the journey of a KeyApply client family who received their Confirmation of Permanent Residence (COPR) in December 2024.

When the whole family awaits PR results

While a permanent residence application is being processed, the family must monitor the residency status of each member. The mother's Work Permit requires renewal consideration; the children also have study permits with their own expiration dates and conditions. A PR application in progress does not mean that temporary resident permits are automatically extended.

April 2024: Completing the PR application update

In April 2024, our partner immigration lawyer worked with the client to finalize updates for the permanent residence application. The client provided documents, signed the necessary forms, and sent them back for the legal team's review. On April 9, 2024, the lawyer confirmed that the updated information had been submitted to the Canadian immigration authorities.

May 2024: A positive signal from IRCC

On May 17, 2024, the partner lawyer forwarded the client an invitation letter from IRCC to use Pre-arrival Services. This was a positive sign, but the invitation letter itself is not an approval of permanent residence.

July 2024: Preparing for permit renewals in parallel

At the beginning of July 2024, the partner lawyer notified the client that it was urgent to initiate the Work Permit renewal application for the mother. The client completed the service agreement, collaborated on document preparation, and discussed the children's Study Permits. Over the following weeks, the client provided photos, bank statements, and necessary paperwork. KeyApply coordinated the process, including assisting with the translation of documents as requested by the legal team.

December 2024: Joyful news for the whole family

On December 16, 2024, the partner immigration lawyer announced that the system had recorded that COPR had been issued for the client and their family. Shortly thereafter, the client confirmed receipt of the COPR and sent a copy to the lawyer. By the end of December 2024, the lawyer continued to handle the withdrawal of the temporary permit renewal applications that were no longer required.

Lessons from this case

The success of a family PR application lies not just in the final decision. During the waiting period, clients may need to update documents as requested by IRCC, monitor progress, and keep track of the Work Permit and Study Permit expiration dates for each member. Having a pending PR application does not automatically grant the right to work, study, or reside beyond the conditions of current permits.
