The Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP) is an economic immigration program that nominates people for permanent residence in Alberta. Candidates must have skills to fill labor shortages or plan to buy or start a business in Alberta. They must also be able to provide for their families. The program is operated by the Government of Alberta and the Government of Canada.
If you are nominated through the program, you can apply for permanent residence status together with your spouse or common-law partner, and dependent children.
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) manages permanent residence applications. The Government of Canada is also the authority that makes the final decision on these applications.
Streams for workers
The AAIP has 4 streams for foreign workers who are living and working in Alberta, or who plan to live and work there:
- Tourism and Hospitality Stream
- Alberta Opportunity Stream
- Alberta Express Entry Stream
- Rural Renewal Stream
Most candidates under the AAIP worker streams must meet job offer requirements in Alberta and employer requirements.
Streams for entrepreneurs
The AAIP has 4 streams for entrepreneurs who plan to live in Alberta and buy or start a business in the province:
- Rural Entrepreneur Stream
- Graduate Entrepreneur Stream
- Farm Stream
- Foreign Graduate Entrepreneur Stream
Update as of October 6, 2026
Alberta Express Entry pathways include Dedicated Health Care, Accelerated Tech, and Law Enforcement. Dedicated Health Care has Express Entry and Non-Express Entry options based on specific criteria. Worker streams use WEOI and invitations to apply; Entrepreneur EOI and Farm Stream have their own processes. Meeting eligibility does not guarantee an invitation or nomination.
On August 10, 2026, the total AAIP allocation increased to 6,603 nominations. The August 12, 2026 entrepreneur guidelines clarify how economic establishment is assessed. Provincial nomination is a step prior to applying for PR; IRCC makes the final decision.
