Success story: Entrepreneur family receives Canadian eCOPR under the Start-up Visa program

Start-up Visa - business family receives Canadian eCOPR

From rounds of document requests and waiting for IRCC responses to receiving their eCOPR, a Vietnamese business family’s journey toward Canadian permanent residency reached a significant milestone in December 2024.

This is a Start-up Visa (SUV) case that KeyApply participated in by coordinating and communicating with specialized partners. The noteworthy aspect is not only the final result but also the process of handling requests for additional documentation and completing the confirmation of permanent residence procedures.

June 2024: Supplemental police certificate

During the PR review process, IRCC requested that the client provide a police clearance certificate. This is a crucial document used to verify immigration eligibility.

On June 26, 2024, the lawyer informed the client that IRCC had granted an extension for document submission until July 16, 2024. The family completed the procedure for obtaining the police certificate in Vietnam and sent the document to their lawyer on July 2, 2024. By July 8, 2024, the legal team confirmed that the documents had been submitted to IRCC on July 2.

Completing the additional requirements within the allotted time is a vital step for the continued processing of the application.

November 2024: SUV application moves to the PR confirmation stage

On November 8, 2024, the project team received an update on the Start-up Visa application status from the involved partner. By November 19, 2024, IRCC sent an email with instructions for the permanent residence confirmation procedure via the Permanent Residence Confirmation Portal.

In the email, IRCC requested that the applicant provide information regarding their presence in Canada, residential address, contact details, and family members. The principal applicant can perform certain steps on behalf of their dependents according to the guidelines. Receiving the PR Portal email does not yet mean the eCOPR has been officially received.

December 6, 2024: Family receives eCOPR

On December 6, 2024, the client emailed their immigration lawyer to announce that they had received their family's eCOPR. The client also attached the document and inquired about the next steps. This is the most important result milestone recorded in the file.

The eCOPR (electronic Confirmation of Permanent Residence) is an electronic document issued by IRCC during the PR confirmation process. For the family, receiving the eCOPR marks a major step forward after the process of preparation, submitting additional documents, and waiting for approval.

Why is this story notable?

First, the Start-up Visa is not just about the business development phase. Entrepreneurs participating in the program must also meet requirements regarding immigration files, personal documentation, and compliance checks.

Second, a request for additional documents does not necessarily mean the application will be rejected. In this case, the client was granted an extension to submit their police certificate, completed the documentation, and the application continued to be processed.

Third, it is important to distinguish between the milestones in the PR process. The application status update letter, PR Portal instructions, and eCOPR are documents with different meanings.

Fourth, coordination between the client and professional units is crucial. When there are requests for additions or a need to verify information, timely communication helps all parties track the progress and prepare for the next steps.
