Outstanding Benefits of the Open Work Permit in the Start-Up Visa Program

The current Start-Up Visa program is the only one with a process that features:

  • Submitting a permanent residency (PR) application first, then applying for a Work Permit later.
  • The main applicant can apply for a 3-year Open Work Permit.
  • Spouses of main applicants are granted an accompanying Open Work Permit.
  • Dependent children can apply for a Study Permit to pursue education in Canada.
  • No limit on the number of OWP renewals; if PR is obtained, no further renewal is needed.
  • The ability to live and work anywhere in Canada, except for the province of Quebec.
  • No age limit and no specific educational degree requirements.
  • Only an IELTS General 5.0 score or equivalent French proficiency is required.
  • No Labor Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) required, and no dependence on any specific employer.
  • No prior work or business management experience required.
  • Fast Work Permit processing times, within just a few months.

Process for Applying for a 3-Year Open Work Permit for Start-Up Visa Applicants

Effective October 3, 2024, the Government of Canada officially implemented a policy granting 3-year Open Work Permits to Start-Up Visa applicants. Previously, applicants could only apply for a Closed Work Permit, limiting them to working only within their own start-up venture. Now, with an Open Work Permit, they can work for any employer in Canada while awaiting PR processing.

Eligibility Requirements to Apply for an Open Work Permit:

  • Have already submitted an application for permanent residency (PR) through the Start-Up Visa program.
  • Have received an Acknowledgement of Receipt (AOR).
  • Be an essential member of the start-up entrepreneur team.
  • Intend to reside in Canada, outside of Quebec.
  • Demonstrate sufficient financial means to settle in Canada.

Additionally, the applicant's spouse and dependent children can also apply for open work permits or study permits, helping the family build a life together in Canada.
