Success story: From nail industry Work Permit to Study Permit at Conestoga College

Every client who comes to KeyApply has a unique plan. This story is about an individual working in the nail industry in Canada who decided to pursue a new educational path in Ontario.
When a nail industry Work Permit is nearing expiration
The client was working in Canada on an employer-specific Work Permit in the nail industry, set to expire in May 2026. This was the moment to evaluate the next steps, including residency status, academic eligibility, and career plans.
Choosing a new program at Conestoga College
The client decided to apply for the Advanced College Diploma – Civil Engineering Technology program (with a Co-op option) at Conestoga College, Cambridge – Fountain Street campus, Ontario. This was a significant shift from their current job.
KeyApply accompanies the application process
Starting in late 2025, there were exchanges and updates regarding the school application. In January 2026, KeyApply coordinated with partner immigration consultants to file the Study Permit application, while continuing to monitor enrollment progress. Over the following months, the school provided updates and requested additional documents; these steps required close monitoring to finalize the student file.
Great news: Study Permit approved
In April 2026, the partner immigration consultant announced that the client’s Study Permit had been approved. In May 2026, the visa approval results were recorded as part of the school enrollment procedure. This was a major milestone for the client transitioning from working to studying in Canada.
From visa results to enrollment confirmation
After receiving the approval, the client still needed to meet administrative requirements and update documents with the school. By October 2026, KeyApply received confirmation that the client had enrolled in the Fall 2026 semester at Conestoga College. Thus, the story does not end with the visa success but includes a concrete enrollment outcome.
Lessons from this journey
Not every success story starts with a refusal. Sometimes, success comes from identifying a new direction, preparing at the right time, and persistently completing every requirement. Those currently on a Work Permit in Canada can explore the option of returning to school, but they must individually assess their eligibility for a Study Permit, residency status, finances, and work rights during their studies.
Being granted a Study Permit does not automatically guarantee a PGWP or permanent residency in the future. The requirements for each program must be checked against current policies.
