1. Introduction to the College
Douglas College is a public post-secondary educational institution in British Columbia, Canada. The college offers programs for international students and is included on the IRCC’s Designated Learning Institutions (DLI) list. A suitable approach is to start with your field of study and the type of credential, then compare admission requirements, campus, duration, and budget.
2. Location and Learning Environment
Locations: New Westminster and Coquitlam. As the college has multiple campuses, not every program is available at all of them. Before leasing housing or booking flights, confirm the study location and whether the format is in-person, hybrid, or online via your Letter of Acceptance and the program page. Create a separate budget for housing, food, transportation, insurance, and costs for accompanying family members.
3. Academic Programs
Fields of study to explore in the college catalog include business, science, arts, health, and community services. Program types include certificates, diplomas, associate degrees, bachelor's degrees, and post-degree programs. The college's overall catalog and the programs currently open to international students may differ; you must select a program that is accepting applications for your intended intake.
Certificates, diplomas, advanced diplomas, graduate certificates, and bachelor's degrees have different levels and requirements. A graduate certificate is not a master's degree. If you intend to transfer to a university, check credit transfer agreements, grade requirements, and the number of credits that will actually be recognized. Regarding co-op, practicum, or placement opportunities, review whether they are mandatory or elective, participation requirements, and the necessary documentation.
4. Admission Requirements and Application
The college evaluates applications based on individual program standards and the educational credentials of the country where you studied. Applicants must compare their diplomas, transcripts, prerequisite subjects (such as English, math, or science), and specific requirements found on the program page. Post-degree programs may require a relevant associate/bachelor's degree; arts programs may require a portfolio, audition, or interview; and programs with practicums may require additional documentation.
Prepare your passport, degrees, transcripts, required translations, and language certificates accepted by the college. Check the overall score, individual skill requirements, and certificate expiration dates for your specific level of study; a single general IELTS score does not apply to all programs. EAP/English pathways and exemption conditions must be confirmed separately. Meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee admission if the program is competitive or already at capacity.
5. International Tuition and Budgeting
The international tuition page currently lists 682.40 CAD per credit. For example, 30 credits would cost 20,472 CAD, excluding mandatory student fees. Actual credits and academic calendars may vary; tuition rates are subject to change.
Separate tuition fees from ancillary/student fees, insurance, books, equipment, uniforms, lab fees, placement fees, and living expenses. When the schedule lists prices by term or credit, ensure you sum the correct number of terms/credits for your specific pathway. Deposits are typically applied to your tuition account; read the refund policy and deadlines before making any payments. The tuition tag on KeyApply, when available, only serves as a relative comparison between institutions, similar to the classification of Master’s & PhD groups, and does not replace an official program quote.
6. Scholarships and Financial Aid
Scholarships and awards have specific conditions regarding programs, academic years, academic performance, documentation, and international student status. You must check whether each award is open to international students or only to citizens/permanent residents, as well as application deadlines and renewal requirements. Do not consider a scholarship as guaranteed until you have received written confirmation from the college.
7. Intakes and Enrollment Status
Start dates and application deadlines are published by individual program, not as a general calendar for all majors. When selecting a Fall, Winter, or Spring/Summer intake, check if that program is offered for the corresponding term, the campus, document submission deadlines, and deposit deadlines. Statuses like open, waitlist, closed, or suspended can change; KeyApply will re-verify these before assisting with your application.
8. DLI, Study Permit, and PGWP
DLI Number: O19360973702. You must use the correct DLI number and campus associated with your LOA when preparing your application. Being a public institution with a DLI number does not mean every program is eligible for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP).
Before registering, check if the program is PGWP-eligible, confirm the CIP code and field of study requirements if applicable, the credential type, the study format, and your academic history. According to current IRCC guidance, college/polytechnic programs that do not grant bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degrees generally require a CLB/NCLC 5 language proficiency across all four skills; field-of-study requirements apply to study permit applications submitted on or after November 1, 2024, subject to IRCC conditions and exemptions. Bachelor’s degree programs have their own regulations.
Students must also meet individual conditions such as program duration, full-time study status, PGWP application deadlines, and online study regulations. English-only programs and programs taught by private institutions under licensing agreements have different rules. Your LOA, PAL/TAL (if needed), and study permit are separate steps; the college does not determine the issuance of permits. Studying at the college does not guarantee the issuance of a PGWP, a 3-year term, employment, or permanent residency.
