Canada's backlog of applications has risen to 2.4 million.

(CIC News) IRCC's backlog has increased to 2.4 million applications.

The number of pending applications increased by 257,499 last month, largely due to a significant rise in temporary residency applications.

  • Statistics from June 1, 2022 show that the number of citizenship applications was 394,664 , compared to 399,325 on May 2, 2022.
  • The number of permanent resident applications was 522,047 as of June 6, 2022.
  • Statistics show that the number of temporary residence permits (for work, study, and tourism) has increased to 1,471,173 as of June 6, 2022.

The backlog has unfolded as follows since last summer:

  • June 1-6, 2022: 2,387,884
  • April 30 - May 2, 2022: 2,130,385
  • April 11-12, 2022: 2,031,589
  • March 15-17, 2022: 1,844,424
  • February 1, 2022: 1,815,628
  • December 15, 2021: 1,813,144
  • October 27, 2021: 1,792,404
  • July 6, 2021: 1,447,474

The Express Entry backlog continues to improve.

The backlog of applications across the three Express Entry programs has improved over the past month. It currently stands at 31,603 compared to 40,889 at the end of April.

The Canada Experience Class (CEC) stands at 6,088, compared to 7,522 on April 29.

The Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSWP) has 25,081 applicants, compared to 32,883 at the end of April.

The Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP) advertising space is 434, compared to 484 at the end of April.

IRCC temporarily suspended draws for FSWP and FSTP candidates in December 2020 amid the pandemic, and for CEC candidates in September 2021. In recent months, they have prioritized completing Express Entry applications so they can resume invitations to candidates in all three programs in early July. Once these draws resume, IRCC is committed to returning to pre-pandemic service standards of processing most Express Entry applications within six months.

The backlog of family reunification sponsorship applications is increasing.

The total number of family records reached 112,837 compared to 108,863.

The Spousal, Partner, and Child sponsorship program saw a slight increase compared to the end of April, from 67,929 to 67,102.

The Parent and Grandparent Program (PGP) has seen a rebound, now standing at 41,802 from 38,478. IRCC has yet to release details on its 2022 PGP plans. Recently, IRCC announced that, effective July 4th, it is implementing reforms that will allow some parents and grandparents to remain in Canada for up to seven years per entry under the Super Visa.

The backlog of temporary residence visas (work, student, tourist) has increased by over 200,000.

The number of people remaining in temporary accommodation is 1,471,173, an increase of 216,382 compared to April 29 (previously 1,200,791).

The increase in temporary residency applications at this time of year is normal to some extent. There is a significant seasonal factor to temporary residency applications, primarily due to certain individuals wishing to travel to Canada between spring and fall. For example, most international students apply for study permits at this time so they can begin their studies in Canada at the start of the academic year in late August and early September. Another example is the increased number of temporary resident visa (TRV) applications at this time of year, also common as people wish to visit Canada during the warmer months between spring and fall.

The main exception is the Emergency Visa for Ukraine (CUAET) issued in March for Ukrainians wishing to move to Canada. The IRCC website reports that 296,163 CUAET applications were received between March 17 and June 8.

Thus, the total backlog of TRV has increased to 771,482 from 621,451 on April 29.

Meanwhile, the backlog of study permits stands at 173,353 compared to 132,280.

The backlog of work permits is 236,735 compared to 189,061.

The backlog of work permit renewals has also increased to 171,998 from 144,842.

What is the government doing?

At the end of January, IRCC provided an update to the public on its efforts to manage the backlog of applications, achieving higher processing standards and modernizing the immigration system. This requires greater investment in technology and hiring more staff.
