What is "Express Entry's tie-break rule"?
Since Canada's travel restrictions were put in place in mid-March 2020 to slow the spread of the coronavirus, each Express Entry draw has had binding rules in place. The tie-break rule is used to rank candidates with the same score in the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) . Candidates are ranked by the date and time their Express Entry profiles were added to the pool. This means the tie-break rule prioritizes profiles that have been in the Express Entry pool for longer.
For example, the most recent Express Entry draw on July 6, 2022, issued 1,500 invitations to apply for permanent residency to candidates with a CRS score of at least 557. In this draw, a tie-break rule was used. This meant that candidates with an exact CRS score of 557 who submitted their Express Entry profile one day and time before the specified date and time received an invitation. The date and time used for this draw was November 13, 2021, at 2:20:46 UTC.
The tie-break rule typically applies to candidates whose CRS score equals the cut-off score of the draw . In the July 6, 2022 draw, only candidates with an exact CRS score of 557 were affected .
