Some relatives of Canadian citizens/permanent residents may be sponsored under the family reunification program.

Those eligible for sponsorship may be relatives in the following special circumstances:

Case 1: Siblings , nephews/nieces/nephews (children of siblings), grandchildren (paternal/maternal).

  • It involves a sponsor who is a Canadian citizen/permanent resident and is related by blood or adoption.

  • Under 18 years old
  • Single (neither married nor living together )

You cannot provide bail if:

  • One of the parents is still alive.

  • Abandoned by parents
  • Some people take care of children while their parents are still alive.
  • Parent is imprisoned or detained.

Case 2: Sponsoring a relative who has no other relatives in Canada.

Canadian citizens/permanent residents can sponsor a relative, of any age , if they meet the following requirements :

  • If the sponsor has no relatives living with them, you can sponsor them as follows :
    • Couple
    • Fiancee
    • Same-sex partner
    • Son
    • Parents
    • Grandparents

    • Orphaned grandchildren
  • The guarantor has no relatives (aunt, uncle, or any of the people on the list above) :

If the sponsored relative has a spouse or dependent child who wants to come to Canada, you must include them in the sponsorship application.

For example, who is eligible for sponsorship?

Example 1: Sponsoring an aunt

Veronica is unmarried and has no children. She is a permanent resident of Canada . Her parents and grandparents have passed away, and she has no relatives who are Canadian citizens or permanent residents. She wishes to sponsor her aunt Betty, who is very close to her . Aunt Betty is married and has a daughter .

Veronica meets the requirements to sponsor her aunt. In the application, Betty will be the principal applicant and her husband will be the dependent. Betty's daughter will be included in the application if she meets the dependent child requirement.

Example 2: Sponsoring a cousin

Sam is an only child. His parents and grandparents have all passed away . He was raised in the United States by his cousin . His cousin is now settled in Canada and holds permanent residency. He is single and has no relatives who are Canadian citizens or permanent residents. Sam wants to sponsor his cousin from the United States. His cousin is also single.

Example 3: It is NOT possible to sponsor an aunt/uncle/cousin-in-law.

Aba is a Canadian citizen . Her mother, her only remaining relative in Canada, has passed away . Aba is close to her uncle (her mother's younger brother) and her aunt (her mother's sister-in-law). Aba's uncle recently passed away , and Aba wants to sponsor her aunt . Aba is NOT eligible to sponsor her aunt because she is not related by blood.
