George Brown College opened in 1968, initially welcoming over 2,000 students. Beyond programs in construction, early childhood education, dental services, and culinary arts—programs that continue to be offered—George Brown once offered programs that may no longer be relevant today, such as sign language or clockmaking. The college even prepared students for maritime careers through a marine engineering program. Since then, the student body has grown to over 30,000. People come to George Brown from across the Greater Toronto Area, Canada, and the world to develop the skills and gain the practical experience necessary to succeed in the workplace. Since 2004, under the leadership of current President Anne Sado, George Brown has more than doubled in size, expanded its international partnerships, and strengthened its commitment to reinforcing Toronto's cultural, economic, and social fabric.

Studying in downtown Toronto, students will live, study, and work in the heart of Canada's largest and most diverse economy. George Brown offers over 160 certificate, diploma, graduate, and career-focused degree programs—one of the widest full-time university programs in Canada. Most programs include a field education component, giving students invaluable opportunities to work and learn with industry partners who may even become future employers.
