Australian Immigration: Global Talent Visa

If you want to live and work in Australia, you might consider the Global Talent Visa program. This visa attracts talented and experienced individuals to work and settle in Australia, especially those with relevant skills in fields such as healthcare, technology, science , and finance .

The Global Talent Visa is part of a federal government initiative to help support the nation's COVID-19 recovery and boost local employment. As such, the Department of Home Affairs plans to invest heavily in the
Global Talent Independent Program ( GTIP ) and triple the number of applications processed to 15,000 for the 2020/2021 period.

The following explains the benefits, eligibility criteria, process, and costs associated with the Global Talent Visa.

Benefits of the Global Talent Visa

If eligible, the Global Talent Visa is an extremely attractive option compared to other permanent residency visas (such as the skilled independent visa - 189 and 190) or employer-sponsored visas (186).

  • No skills assessment is required;
  • Meeting a minimum score threshold is not required;
  • There is no requirement to meet a minimum English language requirement;
  • No state/territory nomination or employer sponsorship is required;
  • This may apply to individuals aged 55 and above if they can demonstrate a special economic interest in Australia; and
  • This could be a recent Bachelor's (Honours), Master's, or Doctoral degree in one of the priority fields.

Alternatively, if you are working in Australia and your employer is not willing to nominate you for permanent residency under sub-subclass 186, but you can meet the eligibility criteria, then the Global Talent Visa could be an option for you to stay in Australia long-term.

Eligibility criteria

If you are highly skilled and hold a relevant Master's or PhD degree, the Global Talent Visa is an attractive option for you. To be eligible, your application will be reviewed based on the following criteria. You:

  • having achieved exceptionally outstanding accomplishments that have been internationally recognized;
  • excel in your field of expertise;
  • It will be a contribution to the Australian community;
  • You will have no difficulty finding employment or becoming independent in Australia in your field of talent;
  • Is there an organization or individual in Australia with a national reputation in the same field who can attest to your achievements?
  • having current or potential income of AUD $153,600;
  • meet the eligibility visa requirements in the country; and
  • Your profile relates to one of the following target areas:
    • AgTech
    • FinTech
    • MedTech
    • Cyber Security
    • Space and Advanced Manufacturing
    • Energy and Mining Technology
    • Quantum Information, Advanced Digital, Data Science and ICT.

Unlike skilled independent visas (subclasses 189, 190, and 491) and employer-sponsored visas (subclasses 482 and 186), there is no specific list of occupations for the Global Talent Visa .

Visa process

Regardless of whether you are in or outside of Australia, there are several steps to complete the application process:

  • Send an Expression of Interest (EOI) to GTIP and wait to receive a unique identifier (UIN);
  • Ensure that nominations are received and that the required forms are completed; and
  • Apply for a visa under subcategory 858 - Distinct Talent Visa (DTV).

    Find out where you can be nominated for the Global Talent Visa.

    You are required to choose a nominator and ask them to complete the required form at the time of submitting your DTV application. Your nominator must be:

    • an Australian citizen; or
    • Australian permanent resident; or
    • a qualifying New Zealand citizen; or
    • an Australian organization.

    The nominee must be able to attest to your international and exceptional achievements, based on their expertise in the same field.

    Only one nominee is required for your application; if you provide more than one nominee, the Department of Immigration may require you to select only one nominee. However, you may provide multiple letters of support from:

    • Australian citizen;
    • Australian organizations; and
    • Individuals or organizations that are internationally recognized in your field of expertise to support your application.

    When submitting an EOI to GTIP, you are not required to have a nominator, but it strengthens your EOI.

    You can also change your nominator between submitting your EOI and submitting your DTV application. However, once you submit your DTV application with a completed Form 1000 (identifying your nominator), you will not be able to change the nominator.

    Processing time

    After submitting your EOI to GTIP, it may take several days to several months to receive your UIN. Please note that GTIP is experiencing significant delays in evaluating EOI requests, and some eligible applicants may have to wait three to four months (or even longer) to receive a response.

    After receiving your UIN, you can proceed to apply for DTV. The processing time for DTV applications is one to two months from the date of submission. This is an extremely fast process for applicants to achieve Australian permanent residency.

    If you are in the country, you can now apply for a DTV if you have a substantive visa, bridging visa A, B, or C ( a substantive visa is any visa that is not a bridging visa). Historically, domestic applicants with tourist visas or bridging visas were not permitted to apply for a DTV. However, new regulations effective November 14, 2020, have removed these barriers and allowed more eligible applicants to apply.

    Government visa application fee:

    As of November 2020, the DTV submission fees are as follows:

    Primary Applicant $4,110
    Applicants over 18 $2,055
    Applicant under 18 $1,030

    Other fees may include health examinations, police checks, translation services, etc.

    What are the next steps you need to take?

    If you are an exceptional candidate with expertise in one of the target fields, you may be eligible to apply for the Global Talent Visa. This visa is processed on a priority basis to expedite your path to Australian permanent residency. The Australian Government places great emphasis on the GTIP as part of its initiatives to support Australia's economic recovery from COVID-19.
