Condition
Some academic programs require work experience as part of the program requirements. You may be able to apply for a co-op or intern work permit if:
- Do you have a valid study permit?
- Working is a requirement to complete a study program in Canada.
- Do you have a letter from the school confirming that all students enrolled in this program are required to complete work placements to graduate, and
- The time spent on co-op placement or internship should account for 50% or less of the total duration of the study program.
COVID-19 and co-op placements
During the COVID-19 pandemic, many international students had to study online outside of Canada. If your school and internship provider agree, you can:
- to do an internship for a Canadian company remotely from abroad, or
- work for a company in your home country
If you work remotely from outside Canada, you may be able to work while your study permit and co-op work permit applications are being processed.
Who is ineligible?
You are not eligible to apply for a co-op work permit if you fall into any of the following categories:
- Study English/French as a Second Language (ESL/FSL) programs.
- Take courses on shared interests, or
- Courses to prepare for another study program.
