In 2024, applicants who submitted expressions of interest in 2020 will be invited to submit their sponsorship invitation via email. Please note the deadline in your application.
Regarding the process
If you submitted a sponsorship interest form in 2020 and received an invitation to apply in 2024, you were able to sponsor your parents or grandparents to become permanent residents of Canada.
If you have received an invitation to apply, there are two applications that must be submitted for the parent or grandparent sponsorship program:
- Sponsorship application and
- Application for permanent residence
If both applications are approved, you will sign an agreement called a "commitment" that takes effect from the day the person you are sponsoring (and their family members, if applicable) becomes a permanent resident of Canada.
Who is eligible to sponsor their parents or grandparents?
To be able to sponsor your parents or grandparents, you need to meet the following requirements:
- Accept the invitation to apply.
- 18 years old
- Currently living in Canada
- Being a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or registered in Canada under the Canadian Indian Act.
- There is sufficient money to support the person being sponsored.
- Meet other requirements under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act.
- If you live outside Quebec, you must commit to financially supporting your sponsored family for 20 years and repay any provincial social security benefits if applicable.
- If you live in Quebec, you need to meet Quebec's immigration sponsorship requirements.

Cases where parents or grandparents are not eligible for sponsorship include:
- I have not yet received an invitation to apply.
- Under 18 years old
- Not residing in Canada at the time of application and when parents or grandparents become permanent residents.
- Not a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person registered in Canada under the Canadian Indian Act.
- Currently residing in Canada with a visa or permit.
- The application for permanent residency is still being processed.
- There are not enough funds to support the sponsored person.
- Currently in prison, jail, or reformatory.
- Unrepaid immigration loan or security deposit.
- Failure to fulfill financial commitments from previous guarantees.
- Bankruptcy declared and not yet pardoned.
- Receiving social benefits for reasons other than disability.
- Convicted of violent crimes, crimes against family members, or sexual crimes in or outside of Canada.
- They are not legally permitted to reside in Canada and must leave the country because they have received a deportation order.

Friends who can sponsor
You can sponsor your biological parents and grandparents or through adoption.
In the case If your parents and grandparents are divorced, you will need to file separate applications. If your divorced parents or grandparents are currently married or have a same-sex partner, they become dependents in the application and may immigrate to Canada with your parents and grandparents, if approved.
In your application, you may include your siblings, half-siblings, or step-siblings only if they qualify as dependent children.
You must meet the income requirements for all the people you wish to sponsor and their dependents (spouse, partner, and children).
Your sponsors must also be eligible. To prove they meet the eligibility requirements, your parents and grandparents and their dependents must provide all necessary forms and documents with their application, including any additional information requested during processing, such as health checks and biometrics.
Examples of people you could sponsor.
See the examples below to better understand who you can sponsor.
Example 1: Sponsoring both mother and father, as a couple.
You can sponsor your parents together if they are a couple (married or living together). On the application, you must designate one of them (either your mother or your father) as the primary applicant, called the primary registrant. The other will be designated as a dependent.
If you designate your mother as the primary registrant, your father will be the dependent.
If you designate your father as the primary registrant, your mother will be the dependent.
If you have siblings, you can only include them in your application if they qualify as dependent children. If they are older than the maximum age or do not meet all the requirements, they cannot be added to your parents' application as dependent children. They will have to immigrate on their own if they wish to live in Canada.
Example 2: Sponsoring your father, your stepmother, and their son.
You can sponsor your father, his wife, and their son (your half-brother). On the application, your father must be the primary registrant, called the principal registrant, because he is related to you. Your stepmother cannot be the primary registrant. She will be listed as a dependent of your father. Your step-brother can only be added as a dependent if he qualifies as a dependent child.
Example 3 : Sponsoring your grandparents, mother, and stepfather.
In this situation, you will need to submit two separate sponsorship applications: one for each couple.
On your grandparents' application, you must designate one of them (either your grandmother or your grandfather) as the primary registrant, referred to as the primary registrant. The other will be designated as a dependent.
If you designate your grandmother as the primary registrant, your grandfather will be the dependent. If you designate your grandfather as the primary registrant, your grandmother will be the dependent.
On your mother's application, your mother must be the primary applicant because she is related to you. Her husband cannot be the primary applicant; he will be listed as your mother's dependent.
Friends who cannot sponsor
You cannot provide sponsorship:
- Your spouse's parents and grandparents (your parents-in-law). However, you can be a co-signer on your spouse's parents' application.
- People who are not permitted to enter Canada.

Q&A
How does the Parent and Grandparent Sponsorship Program work?
The application process for the Parent and Grandparent Sponsorship Program is typically open once a year. The program allows Canadian citizens and permanent residents to sponsor their parents and grandparents to come to Canada.
Here's how the program works:
- Step 1: If you are eligible to become a sponsor, you must submit an interest form in sponsoring. This form was available from October 13 to November 3, 2020.
- Step 2: After the online application closes, the Department of Immigration will review the applications and remove duplicates. The Department of Immigration will randomly select and invite potential sponsors to apply to sponsor their parents and grandparents. Invitations are sent via email and the invitation status is posted on the Department of Immigration's website. In 2023, the Department of Immigration invited potential sponsors from interest forms submitted in 2020.
- Step 3: If you are invited to apply, your application must be submitted before the deadline stated in the invitation.
- If you live in Quebec, find out how to sponsor your parents and grandparents in Quebec.
How many applications for sponsoring parents and grandparents does the government accept each year?
In 2022, 23,100 invitations were sent. This will help Canada reach its target of accepting 15,000 complete applications. Canada issues more invitations than its application target because not everyone who is invited actually applies.
Number of invitations sent and application targets in previous years:
| Year of application submission | Number of invitations sent | Application objective |
|---|---|---|
| 2021 | 34,500 | 30,000 |
| 2020 | 13,400 | 10,000 |
