IMPORTANT NOTE

The Embassy announced on January 25, 2024, that original Vietnamese birth certificates are only issued a few days after the baby is born. If you have applied for a Canadian birth certificate, the Embassy can only issue a certified copy of the Vietnamese birth certificate, not the original . If you intend to conceal the original Vietnamese birth certificate, please be aware that if discovered, the certificate will be revoked.

A "birth extract" is an exact copy of the information contained in the original birth certificate. It contains all the important information such as name, date of birth, place of birth, and parents' information, but it is not the original; it is a copied version. Birth extracts are often used in situations where using the original birth certificate is not really necessary or when the original cannot be accessed. This extract is considered official legal proof of a person's birth and is accepted in many administrative and legal situations.

Regarding the issuance of Personal Identification Numbers:

• Currently, because electronic civil registration software is not yet available abroad, embassies cannot link with domestic civil registration databases. Therefore, providing Personal Identification Numbers to children registered at Vietnamese embassies abroad is not yet possible. The embassies will announce when the Personal Identification Numbers can be provided.

• He took the photo digitally, against a white background, without wearing a hat (taken at home, no need to go to a studio).
• Birth certificate (for children born within the last few days). If a birth certificate from the hospital is available, the embassy will issue an original birth certificate. The original should be a high-quality color copy.
  A birth certificate is a document sent by the hospital; you only need the one containing the hospital's information and the baby's details.

  If you don't have all the above documents, the embassy will issue a Birth Certificate Extract. While equally valid, the extract is just a printed blank sheet of paper and not very aesthetically pleasing. You won't be able to obtain a birth certificate later if you've already accepted the birth certificate.
• Father's Vietnamese passport
• My mother's Vietnamese passport
• Parents' marriage certificate (if applicable). If there is no marriage certificate but you want the father's name on the birth certificate, you need to obtain a paternity acknowledgment certificate .
• If one of the parents does not have Vietnamese citizenship, please include the Agreement on Choosing Citizenship for the Child (DOWNLOAD citizenship agreement ) + the Canadian passport of the father or mother.

Q&A

Are the service fees calculated in CAD or USD?

If I don't pick them up in person, how much will it cost to have the documents sent to my home?
When you check out, the system will automatically calculate the shipping cost to your home based on Canada Post's rates.

How long does it take to receive the results?
Results will be available in approximately 2-3 weeks, not including postage if you don't pick them up in person. If you need them more urgently, please let us know.

In the section for place of origin, should I write the place of origin of the child's father or mother?
You can choose for your child either the father's or the mother's hometown.
