Steps to follow
Below is a simple guide to the procedure for obtaining a visa exemption for Vietnam, effective from February 1, 2024:
1) For visa exemption applications : documents proving the applicant's Vietnamese nationality or origin (including old passports, old travel documents, old ID cards, Vietnamese birth certificates, old visa exemption documents, or documents issued by Canada stating Vietnamese nationality or origin...) must all be notarized by a Notary Public or Commissioner of Canada .
2) Note regarding MTTR or MTTD applications for foreign nationals whose spouse has Vietnamese origin or nationality : The spouse's MTTR is not considered a basis for applying for MTTR for the other spouse. The application must include documents proving one person's Vietnamese origin or nationality and a marriage certificate, both notarized by a Notary Public or Commissioner in Canada.
3) Timeframe and procedures:
- Visa-free period: Up to 5 years, or depending on passport validity.
- Visa waiver application process: Submit your application online or via email. If you have a flight scheduled, please notify us via email for timely processing.
4) Required documents:
- Application form for visa exemption certificate : Fill out online and save it.
- Canadian passport: Must be valid for at least 12 months.
- Scanned copies of overseas residence documents: Passport, PR card, Study/Work Permit, etc.
- Digital portrait: White background, no colored glasses, no hat.
- Documents proving Vietnamese origin: Birth certificate, Vietnamese passport, ID card, travel documents from before 1975, etc.

Services for transgender people in Canada
-
Cases where Visa Waiver (VW) is not possible:
- Transgender people in Canada cannot apply for MTT if their Vietnamese birth certificate has not been updated to reflect their current gender.
-
In the case of a Vietnamese national who already has Canadian citizenship and is transgender:
- If the customer wants to do MTT:
- The company accepts applications and will process them as if the applicant is a foreigner (Canadian citizen) with a Vietnamese relative .
- The waiting time for a response from the Vietnamese authorities regarding the possibility of issuing a Temporary Resident Visa (MTT) is 10-20 days , plus the time for processing the application, bringing the total estimated time to about one month or faster.
- Note: Results may be uncertain. If the client agrees to wait, proceed with processing the application.
- If the customer wants to do MTT:
-
Alternative solution:
- For those who do not want to wait long or take risks, the alternative is to apply for an E-Visa to enter Vietnam.
- E-Visa is a faster and more convenient solution, with processing times of only 3–5 business days .
