Master’s and PhD studies in Canada: choosing the right program for your profile

The KeyApply directory helps you compare institutions, Master's, and doctoral programs in Canada based on your academic goals, educational background, language skills, and budget. Each school page provides specific information and official links; always verify a program's admission status before applying.

1. Choose your study track before selecting an institution

Course-based or professional Master's programs typically focus on coursework, professional skills, projects, or internships structured within the curriculum. Thesis-based Master's programs focus on research and a thesis, suitable for those wanting to delve deeper into a topic or prepare for a PhD. A PhD requires in-depth research; professional doctoral degrees such as a DBA or EdD have their own specific goals and structures. Graduate certificates, diplomas, DESS, and microprograms are not Master's degrees.

2. Evaluating your academic profile

You need to cross-reference your degrees and their international equivalency, GPA, foundational subjects, experience, and specific industry requirements. Prepare your transcripts, degree certificates, CV, statement of purpose, letters of recommendation, and language proficiency test scores. Research programs may require a research proposal and securing a supervisor before applying; arts programs may require a portfolio, and professional programs may require work experience or an interview. Meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee admission.

3. Language and location

Check the program's language of instruction, accepted tests, total/component scores, and exemption criteria. An institution having multiple campuses or a bilingual environment does not mean every program is offered in the same language or location. You must confirm whether studies are in-person, online, or blended, as well as residency requirements, housing, climate, transportation, and costs for family members.

4. Budgeting properly

International tuition fees may be calculated by credit, semester, year, or for the entire program. For research-based tracks, you must account for the number of registered semesters, the minimum degree fee, and any continuing/thesis-writing fees if applicable. Separate tuition from ancillary fees, insurance, materials, housing, food, and travel. The Low, Medium, and High tuition tags on KeyApply are relative comparisons; a professional Master's at the same school can be significantly more expensive than a research Master's. Do not use domestic tuition rates or unconfirmed post-exemption figures when budgeting for international study.

5. Funding and scholarships

Distinguish between scholarships, tuition awards/exemptions, and TA/RA support. Clarify the amount, duration, maintenance conditions, work obligations, and remaining tuition to be paid. Only include support confirmed in writing in your secured budget. Course-based programs do not automatically offer funding like research programs; competitive scholarships require meeting citizenship, degree level, and individual deadline requirements.

6. Letters of Acceptance (LOA) and Study Permits

University admissions and study permit decisions are two separate processes. IRCC provides guidance on selecting a DLI and obtaining an LOA before applying for a study permit. As of January 1, 2026, Master's or doctoral degree programs at public institutions are exempt from the PAL/TAL requirement per IRCC guidelines; studies in Québec still require meeting provincial requirements. Information regarding family applications, on/off-campus work, and expedited processing for doctoral students should be reviewed against current conditions and not be assumed as rights or guaranteed processing times for every application.
