The Farm Stream of the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP) is designed to attract candidates with farm management skills and the financial resources to invest in agricultural production operations in Alberta. Eligible candidates may apply for permanent residence in Canada.

Eligibility Requirements:

Candidates must meet the following requirements at the time of application and at the time of assessment by the AAIP. Meeting these criteria does not guarantee that a candidate will be nominated or granted permanent residence.

1. Farm Management Skills:

  • Candidates must demonstrate that they have farm management skills.
  • Evidence may include, but is not limited to:
    • Financial documents related to an existing farm business.
    • Educational credentials, training, and work experience.
    • A business plan for the proposed farm business in Alberta.
    • Proof that a Canadian financial institution is willing to finance this farm business.

2. Financial Resources for Investment:

  • Candidates must have the ability to invest a minimum of 500,000 CAD in a primary production farming business in Alberta.
  • Documents to be submitted include:
    • Proof of a minimum net worth of 500,000 CAD or confirmation of access to a similar amount from other sources.
    • Candidates may be required to prove the ability to invest more than the required minimum.

3. Investment in Agricultural Production:

  • Candidates must provide a detailed business plan regarding the investment in a production farm, included with the application to the AAIP.
  • The business plan will be assessed by Alberta Agriculture to ensure that the agricultural production activity aligns with the requirements of the agricultural industry in Alberta.
  • Candidates with projects that offer the greatest potential for growth related to Alberta's agri-food goals will be prioritized.

Ineligibility:

You are not eligible to apply if:

  • You already have a current nomination that has not expired or is eligible for extension under another AAIP stream.
  • You have received a refusal letter for a previous application stating that you are not permitted to re-apply for a certain period.
  • You have a removal order from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) or the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA).
  • You are an international student studying in Canada, including students participating in internship or co-op programs.

Nomination and permanent residence

The Farm Stream is a provincial nomination process for agricultural production businesses; it does not use a Worker EOI like labor streams. You should verify the Farm Stream requirements, documentation, and fee schedule on Alberta.ca before applying. After being nominated by the AAIP, candidates submit a PR application through IRCC’s Non-Express Entry process. Investment or eligibility does not guarantee nomination, PR, or a work permit.
