C42 – Open Work Permit for spouses of international students

For spouses or common-law partners of study permit holders who fall into the categories permitted by IRCC.

Key eligibility and conditions

• From January 21, 2025: Master’s programs of at least 16 months, doctoral degrees, eligible professional degrees, or other specified programs.
• Verification of full-time enrollment, eligible DLI/program, valid study permit, and current residence/study status in Canada.
• Extensions are subject to conditions specific to the program and the permit previously issued.

Required documents

Study permit, enrolment letter, program/duration details, proof of relationship, and status documentation.

Points to note

Studying at a college or holding any random LOA does not automatically grant OWP eligibility for a spouse. A child’s study permit is a separate application.

LMIA exemption does not waive the requirement to meet work permit eligibility criteria. Work permit and permanent residency applications are processed separately.
