Alberta's Graduate Entrepreneur Stream program provides international students who have graduated from post-secondary educational institutions in Alberta with the opportunity to start or operate a business in the province, thereby applying for nomination to become Canadian permanent residents.

Who is an Entrepreneur?

Entrepreneurs are individuals who establish or operate businesses with the goal of generating profit, often considered creators of new ideas, goods, services, or processes. Entrepreneurs play a vital role in Alberta's economy, creating jobs and economic benefits for the community.

Eligibility Requirements:

To be eligible for this program, applicants must meet the following requirements:

1. Education :

  • Complete at least two years of full-time study and earn a bachelor's degree or diploma from a public educational institution in Alberta.

2. Work Permit :

  • Applicants must possess a valid Post-Graduate Work Permit (PGWP) issued by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), and it must be valid at the time of submitting the Expression of Interest (EOI).

3. Language Requirements :

  • Applicants must achieve at least a Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) level 7 in each English skill or an equivalent NCLC level 7 in French. Language test results must be valid for less than two years at the time of submitting the Expression of Interest (EOI).

4. Starting a Business :

  • Applicants must establish a new business or acquire an existing business in Alberta with at least 34% ownership. The type of business must not be on the list of ineligible businesses.

Factors that Increase Your Chances of Being Selected:

The following factors can increase your chances of receiving a Business Application request:

  • Work experience : At least 6 months of experience managing or owning a business, or experience working at business incubators, or completion of entrepreneurship courses.
  • Economic benefits : Potential to contribute to Alberta through job creation, investment, intellectual property development, or partnerships with venture capital funds.
  • Age range : Between 21 and 49 years old.
  • Spouse : The spouse must have at least one year of full-time work or study experience in Alberta, or have achieved CLB 5 in language skills.
  • Relatives in Alberta : The applicant or their spouse has relatives such as parents, children, or siblings living in Alberta.

Application Submission Process:

  • Applicants must submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) through the AAIP online system. Applications will be assessed based on the Graduate Entrepreneurship Scorecard , which is scored based on business experience, economic benefits, and human resources.

Legitimate Business:

The applicant's company needs to meet the following requirements:

  • Businesses must provide a clear economic benefit to Alberta, including generating income from the sale of goods or provision of services.
  • Comply with federal, provincial, and local legal regulations regarding licenses and certifications.
  • Applicants must own at least 34% of the shares and be involved in day-to-day management in Alberta.
