1. Introduction to the College

Algonquin College is a public post-secondary educational institution in Ontario, Canada. The college offers programs for international students and is listed among the Designated Learning Institutions (DLI) by IRCC. An effective approach to choosing a program is to start with the field of study and the type of credential, then verify the entry requirements, campus, duration, and budget.

2. Location and Learning Environment

Locations: Ottawa, Pembroke, and Perth. For institutions with multiple locations, not every program is offered at every campus. Before signing a lease or booking flights, verify the study location and the delivery method—whether in-person, hybrid, or online—on your Letter of Acceptance (LOA) and the program webpage. Create a separate budget for housing, food, transportation, insurance, and expenses for any dependents accompanying you.

3. Academic Programs

Fields of study available in the college catalog include business, technology, engineering, design, health, community services, and tourism. Program types include certificates, diplomas, advanced diplomas, bachelor's degrees, and graduate certificates. The college's overall catalog and the catalog open to international students may differ; you must select a program that is currently accepting applications for your intended intake.

Certificates, diplomas, advanced diplomas, graduate certificates, and bachelor's degrees have different levels and requirements. A graduate certificate is not a master's degree. If you wish to transfer credits to a university, check credit transfer agreements, grade requirements, and the number of credits actually recognized. For co-op, practicum, or placement components, verify whether they are mandatory or elective, as well as the participation criteria and necessary documentation.

4. Admission Requirements and Application

The college evaluates applications on a program-by-program basis and considers the equivalence of degrees from your home country. Applicants must compare their diplomas, transcripts, and prerequisite subjects (such as English, math, or science) against the specific requirements found on each program page. Post-graduate programs may require a relevant associate or bachelor's degree; art programs may require a portfolio, audition, or interview; and programs with clinical or practical components may require additional documentation.

Prepare your passport, diplomas, transcripts, required translations, and language certificates accepted by the college. Verify the total score, individual skill requirements, and the validity period of your certificate for your specific level of study; a single IELTS score does not apply to all programs. English pathways/EAP and eligibility for certificate waivers must be confirmed separately. Meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee admission if a program is competitive or full.

5. International Tuition and Budgeting

The international fees page lists approximately 17,225–23,000 CAD for an 8-month academic year, including tuition, insurance, U-Pass, sports, and other student fees mentioned on the page. This is an estimated cost range, not a net tuition fee or a quote for every program; you must obtain an official quote for your specific program and intake.

Separate tuition from ancillary/student fees, insurance, books, equipment, uniforms, lab fees, placement fees, and living expenses. When a table lists costs per term or credit, you must calculate the total based on the number of terms/credits in your study plan. Deposits are usually applied toward your tuition account; read the refund policy and deadlines carefully before making a payment. The tuition tags on KeyApply, where available, are for relative comparison between schools only, similar to the classification of Master's & PhD groups; they do not replace official program fee quotes.

6. Scholarships and Financial Aid

Scholarships and awards have specific conditions regarding the program, academic year, academic performance, application records, and international student status. You must verify if each award is open to international students or limited to citizens/permanent residents, as well as checking deadlines and maintenance requirements. Do not consider a scholarship as guaranteed until you have received written confirmation from the college.

7. Intakes and Enrollment Status

Start dates and application deadlines are published per program, not as a general calendar for all majors. When selecting a Fall, Winter, or Spring/Summer intake, verify that the program is open for that term, check the campus location, document submission deadlines, and the deposit due date. The status of "open," "waitlist," "closed," or "suspended" may change; KeyApply will re-verify this before assisting with your application.

8. DLI, Study Permit, and PGWP

DLI Number: O19358971022. You must use the DLI number and campus that correspond to your LOA when preparing your application. Being a public institution with a DLI number does not mean every program is eligible for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP).

Before applying, check if the program is PGWP-eligible, confirm the CIP code and field of study requirements (if applicable), credential type, delivery format, and your own educational history. Under current IRCC guidelines, college/polytechnic programs that do not grant a bachelor's, master's, or doctoral degree usually require a CLB/NCLC 5 in all four skills; field of study requirements apply to study permit applications submitted on or after November 1, 2024, subject to IRCC conditions and exceptions. Bachelor's degree programs have their own specific regulations.

Students must also meet individual conditions such as program duration, full-time enrollment status, PGWP application deadlines, and online learning regulations. English-only programs and programs taught by private institutions under licensing agreements have different regulations. The LOA, PAL/TAL (if required), and the study permit are separate processes; the college does not decide the issuance of permits. Studying at the college does not guarantee the issuance of a PGWP, a 3-year permit, employment, or permanent residency.

9. Application Process with KeyApply

  1. Submit your diplomas, transcripts, language certificates (if available), desired program, intended intake, and budget.
  2. Compare programs currently accepting international students, entry requirements, campuses, fees, and PGWP eligibility based on your profile.
  3. Prepare your application according to the checklist, including translations and supporting documents; submit through the official application channel guided by the college.
  4. Read the offer conditions, complete any missing requirements, and pay the deposit on time according to the college’s instructions.
  5. Receive your LOA, complete the PAL/TAL step if applicable, and prepare your study permit application. Immigration consulting is handled by an RCIC or a lawyer.
