1. Introduction to the institution
The Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) is a public post-secondary educational institution in Alberta, Canada. The school offers programs for international students and is listed on the IRCC's Designated Learning Institutions (DLI) list. A suitable approach for selection is to start with the field of study and credential type, then cross-reference admission requirements, campus, duration, and budget.
2. Location and learning environment
Location: Edmonton and associated campuses depending on the program. For schools with multiple campuses, not every program is offered at every location. Before renting housing or booking tickets, confirm the study location and the mode of delivery (in-person, hybrid, or online) on your letter of acceptance and the program page. Prepare a separate budget for housing, food, transportation, insurance, and costs for accompanying family members.
3. Academic programs
Fields of study to explore in the school's catalog include business, information technology, engineering, health, and vocational training. Program types include certificates, diplomas, applied degrees, and bachelor's degrees depending on the curriculum. The school's overall catalog and the catalog open to international students may differ; you must select a program that is accepting applications for your intended intake.
Certificates, diplomas, advanced diplomas, graduate certificates, and bachelor's degrees have different levels and requirements. A graduate certificate is not a master's degree. If you wish to transfer to a university, check credit transfer agreements, grade requirements, and the actual number of transferable credits. For co-op, practicum, or placement components, determine whether they are mandatory or elective, participation requirements, and necessary documentation.
4. Admission requirements and application
The school evaluates applications based on each program and the educational equivalency of your home country. Applicants must compare their diplomas, transcripts, prerequisites (such as English, math, or science), and specific requirements listed on the program page. Post-diploma programs may require relevant diplomas/degrees; arts programs may require a portfolio, audition, or interview; and clinical/practicum programs may require additional documentation.
Prepare your passport, diplomas, transcripts, required translations, and language certificates accepted by the school. Check the overall score, individual skill requirements, and certificate validity period for your specific study level; a uniform IELTS score does not apply to all programs. EAP/English pathways and certificate exemption criteria must be confirmed individually. Meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee admission if the program is competitive or at capacity.
5. International tuition and budgeting
The 2026/27 tuition rates table lists the Bachelor of Business Administration Year 1 at 22,050 CAD; engineering and health programs have specific rates based on credits and academic year. Do not use the 45,606 CAD total study and living cost figure from the website as tuition. Mandatory fees, books, and living expenses are calculated separately. See the official fee table.
Distinguish tuition from ancillary/student fees, insurance, books, equipment, uniforms, lab fees, placement fees, and living expenses. When the table lists prices per term or per credit, you must multiply by the correct number of terms/credits for the pathway. Deposits are usually applied toward your tuition account; read the refund policy and deadlines before making payment. Tuition tags on KeyApply, if present, are only for relative comparison between schools, similar to the Master's & Doctoral classification; they do not replace the program's fee quote.
6. Scholarships and financial aid
NAIT's International page lists specific awards for the Bachelor of Business Administration and Bachelor of Technology pathways. You must open the criteria for the specific award to check the program, amount, academic term, and maintenance requirements. Do not assume all diploma students or all programs are eligible for the same level of support.
7. Intake periods and enrollment status
Start dates and application deadlines are published by program, not as a general schedule for all disciplines. When choosing a Fall, Winter, or Spring/Summer term, verify that the program is open for that term, the campus location, document submission deadlines, and deposit deadlines. Enrollment statuses like "open," "waitlist," "closed," or "suspended" can change; KeyApply will re-verify these before assisting with your application.
8. DLI, study permit, and PGWP
DLI Number: O18713200642. You must use the DLI number and campus that correspond to your LOA when preparing your application. Being a public institution with a DLI does not mean every program is eligible for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP).
Before applying, check if the program is PGWP-eligible, the CIP code and field of study requirements (if applicable), credential type, study format, and your personal academic history. According to current IRCC guidance, college/polytechnic programs that do not grant bachelor's, master's, or doctoral degrees generally require a CLB/NCLC 5 in all four language skills; field of study requirements apply to study permit applications submitted on or after November 1, 2024, subject to IRCC conditions and exceptions. Bachelor's degree programs have their own regulations.
Students must also meet personal requirements such as program duration, full-time study status, PGWP application deadlines, and online learning regulations. English-only programs and programs taught by private institutions under licensing agreements have different regulations. The LOA, PAL/TAL (if needed), and the study permit are separate steps; the school does not decide on permit issuance. Studying at the institution does not guarantee the issuance of a PGWP, a 3-year permit, employment, or permanent residency.
