1. Institution introduction and program type

Northern Lakes College (NLC) is a public college in Alberta, Canada, that accepts international students. This is Northern Lakes College in Alberta, distinct from Northern Lights College in British Columbia. The college combines campus-based instruction with Supported Distance Learning (SDL); it is essential to understand the mode of study before selecting a study program.

2. Location and campus

The Slave Lake Main Campus is located at 1201 Main Street SE, Slave Lake, Alberta. NLC maintains a network of campuses and support sites in communities throughout northern Alberta. The Fairview Campus will begin operations under NLC in 2026, with an opening ceremony in August 2026. The poster features an actual photo of the Fairview Campus from the college's official announcement. The presence of a classroom or computer support at a campus does not mean every program is taught in person there; please confirm the approved location for international programs.

3. Academic programs and study modes

Options in the international fee schedule include Business Administration Certificate, Business Management Diploma, Early Learning and Child Care, Child and Youth Care, Addictions Counselling, Computer Network Specialist, Educational Assistant, Health Care Aide, Practical Nurse, Social Work, and others. Many programs utilize SDL; Fairview has specific vocational programs marked separately on the campus page. A list of programs available at a campus does not imply that all are open to international students or eligible for the PGWP. Applicants should contact admissions regarding the program, duration, clinical/practicum schedule, and the remote learning ratio for their intended term.

4. Admission requirements

Applicants must meet academic prerequisites, submit academic records, a passport, and meet English language requirements. International guidelines require foreign credential assessment via accepted services such as IQAS or ICES; prepare English translations as requested. The college states an IELTS Academic requirement of an overall 6.0 with no band score below 6.0; some programs have additional or higher requirements. Check alternative test scores, practicum conditions, and program-specific documents before paying fees or requesting credential assessments.

5. International tuition

The 2026–2027 Program Tuition Maximums table (in CAD) lists maximum tuition fees based on the program and standard duration, provided that full-time status is maintained each semester. For example, the 1-year Early Learning and Child Care Certificate is 14,901; the 2-year Diploma is 14,901 for year 1 and 16,386 for year 2. Business Administration Certificate (1 year): 19,380; Business Management Diploma: 19,380 per year for 2 years. Child and Youth Care Diploma: year 1 is 14,166, year 2 is 14,787. These figures represent tuition only and exclude student association fees, other fees, books/supplies, insurance, and living expenses. The PDF notes that prices are subject to change, and admissions should be consulted for current figures. Do not use the 2026–2027 table as a quote for future academic years. Per current international guidelines, the 5,000 CAD deposit is related to the acceptance/PAL process; read the transfer and refund policies in the college's documents.

6. Scholarships

Northern Lakes College's international FAQ currently states that there are no scholarships or bursaries available for international students. Therefore, do not include scholarships in your study budget or count on support that has not been confirmed by the college. If policies change, request written confirmation from the college before incorporating it into your financial plan.

7. Intakes and application deadlines

Intakes depend on the program; international guidelines specify common deadlines: Fall: May 1, Winter: Oct 15, and Spring: Jan 1. The current page lists the Winter deadline as Oct 15, 2026; as of the verification date of Oct 9, 2026, it is still necessary to ask if the program has space and if it is still possible to issue a PAL. The Fall deadline has passed; do not interpret the domestic program start dates as confirmation that international applications are being accepted. PALs are limited in number; the college may stop accepting applications once the quota is reached. For future terms, check for new announcements; do not assume space is available.

8. DLI and PGWP

DLI: O19391056848; IRCC lists Northern Lakes College as a public institution. The fact that an institution is a DLI or has programs in eligible fields does not automatically guarantee a PGWP for every student. NLC has many SDL programs, so it is necessary to confirm the actual format and location of study, the percentage of online learning, the program code at the time of application, and relevant IRCC regulations. Do not consider visiting a campus to use support for an SDL class as proof of in-person study. PGWP eligibility for individual programs/terms has not been verified, and therefore this article does not constitute a commitment regarding PGWP or immigration.

9. Application process

Contact admissions to choose a program/intake and confirm international eligibility → verify the mode of study, campus, and PGWP if this is your goal → prepare passport, credential assessment, translated documents, and English test scores → submit the application per instructions → fulfill all admission requirements → pay the deposit upon receiving an offer → receive a PAL if eligible and space is available → proceed with study permit application and pre-arrival requirements. Do not make payments based solely on the list of programs open to domestic students. Contact admissions@northernlakescollege.ca to confirm current tuition and space availability.

10. Official sources

Source checked on Oct 9, 2026. Tuition, deadlines, and seat availability are subject to change; check official announcements before applying.
