1. Institution Introduction
Northwestern Polytechnic is a public post-secondary educational institution in Alberta, Canada. The institution offers programs for international students and is listed on the IRCC’s Designated Learning Institutions (DLI) list. A recommended approach is to start by identifying your field of study and degree type, then cross-reference admission requirements, campus location, duration, and budget.
2. Location and Learning Environment
Current location: Grande Prairie, Alberta. Northwestern Polytechnic is transitioning to a single-campus model; Fairview will operate under Northern Lakes College in 2026. Do not use outdated admission information for NWP when applying to Fairview. For multi-campus institutions, not all programs are available at every location. Before renting accommodation or booking flights, confirm the location and delivery mode (in-person, hybrid, or online) on your Letter of Acceptance (LOA) and the program webpage. Prepare a separate budget for housing, food, transportation, insurance, and costs for accompanying family members.
3. Academic Programs
Fields of study available in the institution’s catalog include business, technology, health, university studies, and trades. Program types include certificates, diplomas, and degree/transfer programs. The institution's general catalog and the offerings available to international students may differ; ensure you select a program that is currently accepting applications for your intended intake.
Certificates, diplomas, advanced diplomas, graduate certificates, and bachelor’s degrees have different levels and requirements. A graduate certificate is not a master's degree. If planning to transfer to a university, verify credit transfer agreements, GPA requirements, and the number of credits actually recognized. For co-op, practicum, or placement components, verify whether they are mandatory or elective, the participation criteria, and any required documentation.
4. Admission Requirements and Application
The institution evaluates applications based on specific program requirements and the educational equivalence of the country where you studied. Applicants must compare their diplomas, transcripts, prerequisites (such as English, math, or science), and specific requirements listed on the program page. Post-graduate programs may require a relevant diploma/degree; arts programs may require a portfolio, audition, or interview; and clinical/practicum-based programs may require additional documentation.
Prepare your passport, degrees, transcripts, required translations, and language test scores accepted by the institution. Check the total score, individual band requirements, and validity period for your specific level of study; there is no universal IELTS score for all programs. English for Academic Purposes (EAP) pathways and criteria for language test exemptions must be confirmed separately. Meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee admission if the program is competitive or has reached capacity.
5. International Tuition and Budgeting
The estimated 2026–27 international tuition for the Business Administration Diploma is 18,900 CAD for Year 1 and 18,900 CAD for Year 2, including tuition and mandatory non-instructional fees. This estimate is based on 30 credits per year and excludes books, housing, parking, and living expenses; it does not account for future fee increases. Official fee source.
Distinguish tuition from ancillary/student fees, insurance, books, equipment, uniforms, lab fees, placement fees, and living expenses. When prices are listed by term or credit, you must calculate the total based on the exact number of terms/credits in your study path. Deposits are usually applied toward tuition; read the refund policy and deadlines before making payment. The tuition tag on KeyApply, when available, serves only for relative comparison between institutions, similar to the Master’s & Doctoral classification, and does not replace the official program fee quote.
6. Scholarships and Financial Aid
Scholarships and awards have specific conditions regarding programs, academic years, GPA, application dossiers, and international student status. Verify whether each award is open to international students or restricted to citizens/permanent residents, and check deadlines and maintenance requirements. Do not consider a scholarship as secured until you have received written confirmation from the institution.
7. Intakes and Enrollment Status
Start dates and application deadlines are published by program, not on a general calendar. When selecting a Fall, Winter, or Spring/Summer intake, verify that the program is open for that term, check the campus, and note deadlines for document submission and deposit payments. Statuses such as open, waitlist, closed, or suspended may change; KeyApply will re-verify this before assisting with your application.
8. DLI, Study Permit, and PGWP
DLI Number: O19391056654. You must use the correct DLI number and campus associated with your LOA when preparing your application. Being a public institution and having a DLI does not mean all programs are eligible for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP).
Before applying, verify if the program is PGWP-eligible, check the CIP code, applicable field of study requirements, degree type, delivery mode, and the applicant's academic history. Under current IRCC guidelines, college/polytechnic programs that do not grant bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degrees generally require a language proficiency of CLB/NCLC 5 in all four skills; field of study requirements apply to study permit applications submitted on or after November 1, 2024, subject to IRCC conditions and exceptions. Bachelor’s degree programs have separate regulations.
Students must also meet individual eligibility criteria such as program duration, full-time status, PGWP application deadlines, and distance learning regulations. Stand-alone English language programs and programs delivered by private institutions under licensing agreements have different regulations. The LOA, PAL/TAL (if required), and study permit are distinct steps; the institution does not determine permit issuance. Studying at the institution does not guarantee the issuance of a PGWP, a 3-year duration, employment, or permanent residency.
