Switching from Visitor Status to Study Permit in Canada
Individuals currently in Canada as visitors are not automatically entitled to apply for a Study Permit from within Canada. The eligibility to apply from within Canada depends on whether the applicant falls under one of the categories permitted by IRCC regulations.
1. Who can apply within Canada?
Some categories that may be eligible include: individuals holding a valid study or work permit; certain family members of study or work permit holders; minors studying in Canada; individuals who have completed a short-term course required for admission to a DLI; and other special groups as per current regulations. Each case must be assessed individually, including residency status and remaining validity.
2. What if I only have Visitor Status?
Simply holding a visitor record or visitor visa does not automatically grant the right to apply for a Study Permit from within Canada. If you do not fall under an eligible category for in-Canada applications, you are generally required to follow the application process from outside Canada, even if you are currently present in the country. You should not begin a program that requires a Study Permit before being authorized to do so.
3. Required Documents
- Passport and proof of current residency status in Canada.
- Letter of Acceptance (LOA) from a designated learning institution (DLI); PAL/TAL or CAQ where applicable.
- Proof of financial support, study intent, and academic documents.
- Documentation proving eligibility to apply from within Canada, if applicable.
- Other documents as specified by your personalized IRCC checklist.
4. KeyApply Support Process

5. Costs and Notes
The "Consultation Required" variant showing 0 CAD represents the initial inquiry step and does not imply that all processing services are free of charge. Professional service fees and government fees (if applicable) will be disclosed after an assessment.
