S61/S62 – Work Permit for refugee claimants and unenforceable removal orders
The R206 work permit is intended for individuals who cannot support themselves without working and meet the specified application status requirements.
Target audience and key requirements
- S61: refugee claim forwarded to the RPD and pending a decision under IRCC conditions.
- S62: unenforceable removal order.
- Proof of financial need and completion of medical examination requirements where applicable.
Documents to prepare
Claim documents/removal order, financial evidence, medical examination records, and identity documents.
Important notes
A work permit does not automatically grant temporary resident status; family members are not automatically entitled to an OWP just because the principal applicant holds an S61/S62 permit.
LMIA exemption still requires meeting work permit eligibility criteria. Work permit and permanent residency applications are assessed separately.
