1. College Overview
College of the North Atlantic is a public post-secondary educational institution in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. The college offers programs for international students and is listed as a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) by the IRCC. A suitable selection strategy is to start by identifying the field of study and credential type, then cross-referencing admission requirements, campus location, program duration, and budget.
2. Location and Learning Environment
Location: multiple campuses across Newfoundland and Labrador. As a multi-campus institution, not all programs are available at every location. Before renting accommodation or booking flights, confirm the study location and the delivery format (in-person, hybrid, or online) via your Letter of Acceptance and the program webpage. Create a separate budget for housing, meals, transportation, insurance, and costs for accompanying family members.
3. Academic Programs
Fields of study available in the college catalog include business and information technology, engineering, health, tourism, applied arts, and trades. Program types include certificates, diplomas, and applied industry-specific training. The overall college catalog and the list of programs open to international students may differ; you must select a program currently accepting applications for your intended intake.
Certificates, diplomas, advanced diplomas, graduate certificates, and bachelor's degrees have varying levels and requirements. A graduate certificate is not a master's degree. If you intend to pursue a university transfer, verify credit transfer agreements, grade requirements, and the actual number of transferable credits. For programs with co-op, practicum, or placement, clarify whether these are mandatory or elective, the conditions for participation, and the documentation required.
4. Admission Requirements and Application
The college evaluates applications based on specific program requirements and the educational equivalency of the country where you studied. Applicants must cross-reference diplomas, transcripts, and prerequisite subjects (such as English, mathematics, or science) with the specific requirements listed on the program page. Post-graduate programs may require a relevant associate or bachelor's degree; art programs may require a portfolio, audition, or interview; and practical programs may require additional documentation.
Prepare your passport, diplomas, transcripts, required translations, and language proficiency certificates accepted by the college. Verify the overall score, individual band scores, and certificate validity period for your specific level of study; a single IELTS requirement does not apply to all programs. English/EAP pathways and exemption conditions must be confirmed separately. Meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee admission if the program is competitive or has reached capacity.
5. International Tuition and Budgeting
The international tuition page lists 4,484 CAD for a standard 15-week semester in the Business & Information Technology group; other groups have specific rates, and intersessions have separate fee schedules. You must correctly sum the semesters, mandatory fees, and program-specific costs to calculate your budget; do not use one semester as the annual tuition cost.
Separate tuition fees from ancillary/student fees, insurance, books, equipment, uniforms, lab fees, placement fees, and living expenses. When prices are listed by semester or credit, you must calculate the total based on the exact number of semesters/credits in your study plan. Deposits are generally applied toward tuition fees; read the refund policy and deadlines before making payment. Tuition tags on KeyApply, where available, are only for relative comparison between schools, similar to "Master's & Doctoral" group classifications; they do not replace the program's official fee quote.
6. Scholarships and Financial Aid
Scholarships and awards have specific conditions regarding the program, academic year, academic performance, application profile, and international student status. Check if each award is open to international students or limited to citizens/permanent residents, and review submission deadlines and renewal requirements. Do not treat scholarships as guaranteed funding until you receive written confirmation from the college.
7. Intake Periods and Enrollment Status
Start dates and application deadlines are announced per program, not as a general calendar for all majors. When selecting a Fall, Winter, or Spring/Summer intake, check if the program is available for that term, the campus location, document submission deadlines, and deposit due dates. Statuses such as open, waitlist, closed, or suspended can change; KeyApply will re-verify these before assisting with your application.
8. DLI, Study Permit, and PGWP
DLI Number: O19441088976. Use this number and the appropriate campus matching your LOA when preparing your application. Being a public institution with a DLI does not mean every program qualifies for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP).
Before enrolling, check if the program is PGWP-eligible, review the CIP code and applicable field of study requirements, credential type, delivery format, and your academic history. Per current IRCC guidelines, college/polytechnic programs that do not grant a bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree generally require a CLB/NCLC 5 in all four language skills; field of study requirements apply to study permit applications submitted on or after November 1, 2024, subject to IRCC conditions and exceptions. Bachelor’s degree programs have their own specific regulations.
Students must also meet individual conditions such as program duration, full-time enrollment status, PGWP application deadlines, and regulations regarding online study. Standalone English language programs and programs delivered by private institutions under licensing agreements have different regulations. Your LOA, PAL/TAL (if applicable), and study permit are separate steps; the college does not determine the issuance of permits. Studying at the college does not guarantee the issuance of a PGWP, a 3-year permit duration, employment, or permanent residency.
