What is Category-based selection in Express Entry?
IRCC may hold invitation rounds for groups of candidates with French language proficiency, or occupations or experience that align with economic goals. This is a selection method within Express Entry, not a standalone PR program. Candidates must qualify for at least one of the CEC, FSWP, or FSTP programs and have a profile in the pool.

For the occupation categories with the 12-month threshold mentioned above, full-time or equivalent part-time experience accumulated within the last 3 years does not need to be continuous. It must be accumulated in an occupation that is on the applicable list; you cannot combine different occupations to meet the "same occupation" requirement. The requirements for the underlying federal program are still assessed separately.
Check NOC before preparing your profile
The NOC is determined by actual job duties. Someone with the title "manager," "researcher," "transport," or "IT" does not necessarily belong to a qualifying NOC. For example, the transport category currently includes pilots, aircraft mechanics, aircraft avionics/electronics technicians, and automotive/truck/bus mechanics; it cannot be assumed that all drivers fall under this category. The senior manager category does not include every restaurant or retail manager.
Occupational lists and requirements are subject to change. You must cross-reference the full NOC table on the IRCC source and the Ministerial Instructions for the specific invitation round, rather than using the previous year's occupation list.
CRS and ITA
IRCC ranks candidates eligible for the category based on CRS, then invites top-scoring candidates in the round. Belonging to a priority category does not automatically add CRS points, does not guarantee an ITA, and does not replace PR requirements. Additional points for French proficiency or provincial nomination are calculated according to separate CRS rules.
Assessment process
- Verify CEC, FSWP, or FSTP eligibility.
- Determine the NOC based on job duties, location, and the period of accumulated experience.
- Cross-reference the category list and invitation round requirements; prepare language test results and experience documentation.
- Create/update your Express Entry profile and monitor your CRS.
- If an ITA is received, submit your PR application by the deadline; IRCC will verify both program and category requirements.
The French category is not Francophone Mobility; the Trade occupations category is not synonymous with FSTP. An Express Entry profile also does not automatically grant a work permit or extend work authorization.
