Work Permit under Trade Agreements – Overview
Canada has many LMIA-exempt categories under international agreements. Each branch has its own requirements regarding nationality, profession, and activities.
Key Applicants and Requirements
- CPTPP: investors T50, ICT T51/T54/T55, professionals/technicians T52, and spouses T53 when eligible.
- GATS: professionals T33; business visitors have separate work permit exemption regulations; GATS ICT uses C62/C63.
- CUSMA, CETA, CUKTCA, and agreements with Colombia, Chile, South Korea, Panama, Peru, and Ukraine use corresponding T/F codes.
Required Documentation
Passport, business status, job offer/contract, qualifications, and evidence of investment or ICT relationship.
Important Notes
Vietnamese citizens may explore CPTPP/GATS under eligible branches. Being a member of an agreement does not mean all sectors and categories are applicable.
LMIA exemption still requires meeting work permit issuance criteria. Work permits and permanent residence are assessed separately.
