Express Entry for French-speaking candidates
Candidates with French proficiency may be considered under the French-language proficiency category and receive additional CRS points based on their eligibility. This is a selection category within Express Entry; candidates must still meet the eligibility criteria for at least one of the CEC, FSWP, or FSTP programs.
1. French-language category eligibility
- Minimum NCLC 7 in all four competencies (listening, speaking, reading, writing) on the TEF Canada or TCF Canada.
- A valid Express Entry profile that meets the requirements of the corresponding federal program.
- Meeting the specific instructions of the invitation round; eligible candidates are ranked by CRS score.
There is no fixed CRS threshold that applies to all French-language rounds. An NCLC 7 does not guarantee an ITA, nomination, or PR. This category does not have specific work experience requirements like the trade-specific categories, but the standard experience requirements for CEC, FSWP, or FSTP must still be satisfied.
2. Additional CRS points
Upon achieving an NCLC 7 or higher in all four French language skills:
| English result | Additional points |
|---|---|
| CLB 4 or lower, or no English test | 25 points |
| CLB 5 or higher in all four skills | 50 points |
These are additional points, distinct from core language points or second language points. Not every French speaker is awarded 50 points; calculations must be based on individual skill results using the IRCC CRS tool.
3. Important distinctions
- Francophone Mobility: An LMIA-exempt work permit stream; this is not the Express Entry French-language PR category.
- Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs): Have their own criteria; French proficiency does not automatically result in a provincial nomination.
- Quebec: Has its own selection system; Express Entry candidates must demonstrate the intention to reside outside of Quebec.
4. Preparation and application
- Assess eligibility for CEC, FSWP, or FSTP; choose a NOC based on actual job duties.
- Take the TEF Canada/TCF Canada; include English results if available. Language test results must be less than 2 years old when creating a profile and when submitting a PR application.
- Prepare education/ECA, work experience documentation, and proof of funds as required by the applicable program.
- Create an Express Entry profile and update test results; if an ITA is received, submit the PR application by the deadline, typically 60 days.
As of March 25, 2025, job offers no longer grant 50 or 200 CRS points; however, job offer requirements for certain programs remain in effect. An Express Entry profile does not grant work authorization or extend residency status.
