šŸŽ“ Invitation to the Anderson College Open House - Discover Home Care Support Worker & PSW Programs

KeyApply would like to share a very important and practical topic for those living in Ontario, especially individuals looking to return to school, change careers, or new immigrants:

šŸŽ“ ā€œOntario Student Funding - OSAP and Better Jobs Ontario.ā€

If you are thinking about going back to school but are not financially prepared, the good news is: the province of Ontario can pay for your education.

The two largest programs currently available are:

  • OSAP - Ontario Student Assistance Program
  • Better Jobs Ontario - formerly known as Second Career

🧭 GENERAL INTRODUCTION TO THE TWO PROGRAMS

First, to help everyone visualize the differences between these two programs, we would like to provide a brief overview:

Criteria OSAP Better Jobs Ontario (formerly Second Career)
Purpose Supporting students, those returning to school, and new immigrants Supporting those who are unemployed, laid off, or looking to change careers
Format Grant + Loan 100% funding, no repayment required
Duration Unlimited (college, university) Up to 2 years (practical, ā€œin-demandā€ trades)
Residency Ontario resident, citizen, PR, or protected person Same as OSAP
Provider Ontario Ministry of Colleges and Universities Ontario Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development

Both can help you pursue your studies without financial burden,
they only differ in target audience and objectives.

šŸŽ“ OSAP PROGRAM

šŸ”¹ What is OSAP?

OSAP is the Ontario Student Assistance Program, providing financial aid to students and those returning to school. It consists of two parts:

  • Grants - money that does not need to be repaid
  • Loans - money you must repay after completing your studies

šŸ”¹ Basic Eligibility for OSAP

  • You are a Canadian citizen, permanent resident (PR), or protected person
  • You are an Ontario resident—meaning Ontario is your primary place of residence before starting school.
  • If you are a new immigrant and Ontario is your first place of residence, you are considered an Ontario resident immediately, with no 12-month waiting period.
  • Enrolled in an OSAP-approved program at a valid college, university, or career college.
  • Demonstrate financial need, meaning your current income is insufficient to cover educational costs.

šŸ”¹ For New Immigrants

If you have recently immigrated to Canada, have PR status or are a protected person, and Ontario is the first province where you reside, you are immediately eligible for OSAP.

You will need to prepare: PR Card, COPR, utility bills, rental lease, Ontario driver’s license, or a bank letter to prove your residency.

If you are still only a refugee claimant, you are not yet eligible.

šŸ”¹ For Returning Students (Mature Students)

If you are over 19 (regardless of whether you graduated high school or not), have worked, or have a family, you are still eligible for OSAP. In this case, you are considered an independent student, which has the advantage of:

  • Not needing to disclose parental income
  • OSAP is determined only by your personal or spouse's income

šŸ‘‰ Example:

  • Ms. A, 35, formerly a nail technician, returning to school for a PSW program.
  • OSAP grants $6,000 in grants + $8,000 in loans = $14,000 total.
  • If she chooses to only accept the grant portion, she will owe nothing after graduation.

šŸ”¹ How to choose ā€œGrant onlyā€

When OSAP approves your application, they break it down into:

  • Grant: money you don't have to repay
  • Loan: tuition loan

You can choose to decline the loan portion and accept only the Grant. This way, after graduating, you will have no debt.

šŸ”¹ Specific Funding Amounts

For full-time students

  • Single students with no children: up to $525/week
  • Students with a family/dependents: up to $865/week
  • Additional federal grants:
    • Full-time students: $6,300/year
    • Students with disabilities: $2,800/year
    • With dependent children: $280/child/month

For part-time students

  • Grant for part-time: $2,520/year
  • Grant for students with children: $2,688/year
  • Grant for students with disabilities: $2,800/year
  • Ontario provincial grant: $500/year

šŸ”¹ How to estimate (OSAP Aid Estimator)

Before applying, you can visit: šŸ”— osap.gov.on.ca/AidEstimator

Enter your basic information, and the estimator will show you how much you might receive in grants and loans.

šŸ”¹ Smart tips for using OSAP

  • If your finances are temporarily sufficient, only accept the Grant portion.
  • Do not drop out; otherwise, the grant portion may be converted into a loan.
  • After finishing your studies, you have a 6-month grace period before you must start repaying (if you have loans).

🧱 BETTER JOBS ONTARIO - FORMERLY SECOND CAREER

šŸ”¹ What is this?

Better Jobs Ontario is a provincial government program designed to fund skills training and career changes.

The goal is to help those who are unemployed, laid off, or in unstable employment gain training for a high-demand career.

Previously known as Second Career, it was renamed Better Jobs Ontario.

šŸ”¹ Who can participate?

You may be eligible if:

  • You were laid off or are unemployed
  • You are receiving EI, Ontario Works, ODSP, or have received these in the past
  • You are a citizen, PR, or protected person living in Ontario
  • You have a specific training plan aimed at a high-demand career

šŸ”¹ Funding Amounts

  • Programs ≤ 1 year (≤ 52 weeks): up to $28,000
  • Programs ≤ 2 years: up to $35,000

Includes:

  • Tuition, books, and school fees
  • Travel, living expenses, and childcare
  • Support for individuals with disabilities or those living far from the school

šŸ’” This is funding - not a loan; you do not need to pay it back after your studies.

šŸ”¹ Occupations and programs funded

Only "in-demand" careers - those with high recruitment needs in Ontario.

Examples:

  • Health care: PSW, Nurse, Dental Assistant
  • Trades: Electrician, Plumber, HVAC, Carpenter
  • IT & Technology: Network Technician, Cybersecurity, Web Developer
  • Business & Finance: Accounting, Payroll, HR
  • Transportation: Truck Driver, Logistics

šŸ”¹ Schools that accept this funding

You can attend:

  • Public colleges: George Brown, Seneca, Centennial, Sheridan, Humber...
  • Private career colleges: Anderson, Herzing, Medix, CDI, Oxford, Evergreen, CTS, Trios...

🧩 PRACTICAL REALITY: PUBLIC COLLEGES ARE HARD TO GET INTO

At public colleges, popular programs are almost always full throughout the year. Admission requirements are high, often requiring academic credentials or IELTS scores.

šŸ« SOLUTION: STUDY AT A PRIVATE CAREER COLLEGE

Private career colleges are recognized by the province and authorized to accept Better Jobs Ontario funding, for example:

  • Anderson College
  • Medix College
  • Herzing, Oxford, CDI, Evergreen, Trios, CTS, Willis...

Advantages:

  • Year-round intake (new classes every 1-2 months)
  • Easier admission requirements, usually only a test or interview
  • Dedicated counselors to help you prepare your Better Jobs Ontario application
  • Quick completion, entering the workforce sooner (8-12 months)

šŸ“˜ You can check the list of accredited schools at: šŸ”— www.ontario.ca/privatecareercolleges

šŸ”¹ Application Process

  • Choose your school and program first - this is a crucial tip!
  • Contact your local Employment Ontario Service Provider.

Why?

  • Admissions departments at private colleges are familiar with supporting Better Jobs Ontario applications.
  • They know how to write a Career Plan and which occupations are easily approved.
  • They can explain the point system required for approval.

Application documents include:

  • PR Card, EI documents, or layoff letter
  • Letter of Acceptance (LOA) from the school
  • Career Plan (ask the school’s counseling department for help)
  • Tuition cost estimate
  • Proof of living expenses and income
  • Processing time: 4–6 weeks.

šŸ”¹ Tips & Notes

  • "In-demand" career = higher chance of approval
  • Be honest about your reasons for changing careers
  • Complete your course fully – dropping out may result in funding being stopped
  • Maintain regular contact with your counselor and the school
