Switching from Visitor Status to a Study Permit in Canada
Individuals currently in Canada as visitors are not automatically entitled to apply for a Study Permit from within Canada. The right to apply within Canada depends on whether the applicant falls into one of the categories permitted under IRCC regulations.
1. Who can apply within Canada?
Some cases that may be eligible include: individuals holding a valid study or work permit; certain family members of study or work permit holders; minors currently studying in Canada; individuals who have completed a short-term course required for admission to a DLI; and other special groups as per current regulations. Each case must be assessed individually, including residency status and remaining validity.
2. What if I only have Visitor Status?
Holding a visitor record or visitor visa does not automatically grant the right to apply for a Study Permit within Canada. If you do not fall into the categories eligible to apply from within Canada, you must generally follow the application process from outside Canada, even if you are currently present in the country. You should not begin a program requiring a Study Permit before being authorized to do so.
3. Required Documents
- Passport and documentation of your current residency status in Canada.
- Letter of Acceptance (LOA) from a designated learning institution (DLI); PAL/TAL or CAQ where applicable.
- Proof of financial support, study intent, and academic documents.
- Documentation proving eligibility to apply from within Canada, if applicable.
- Other documents as per your personalized IRCC checklist.
4. KeyApply Support Process
- Receive information and verify residency status.
- Assess eligibility to apply for a Study Permit from within Canada.
- Propose a school selection strategy, assist with document preparation, and outline a suitable application path.
- Transfer the file to an RCIC or immigration lawyer for professional consultation and legal representation when necessary.
5. Fees and Important Notes
The "Request Consultation" variant showing 0 CAD is the intake step and does not imply that the entire application processing service is free. Professional service fees and government fees (if applicable) will be quoted after assessment.
Regulations are subject to change. Please refer to official guidance at IRCC – Apply for a study permit.
