🎓 Mount Saint Vincent University – Nova Scotia, Canada

Mount Saint Vincent University – Nova Scotia, Canada

1. School Overview and Location

Mount Saint Vincent University (MSVU) in Halifax, Nova Scotia, focuses on various fields related to education, people, and community. Distinguish this university from Mount Allison in New Brunswick.

2. Master’s and PhD Programs

The graduate catalog includes Education, Applied Human Nutrition, Child and Youth Study, Aging and Family Science, and other disciplines listed by the university. The PhD in Educational Studies is a collaborative program with Acadia and StFX; not all departments offer a PhD.

3. Learning Formats and Program Options

There are thesis-based and applied tracks. For example, Aging and Family Science offers an MA (thesis) and a course-based Master’s; Education cohorts are typically non-thesis MEd programs. Learning modes should be verified per discipline, as some options are online, while others are campus-based only.

4. Academic Requirements and Application

Use the Application Checklist per Program to check requirements for a bachelor’s degree, disciplinary background, GPA, letters of recommendation, and statement of intent. Education, nutrition, or psychology programs may have specific professional prerequisites or foundational courses; admission is not guaranteed with any degree.

5. Language Requirements

Applicants must meet English proficiency requirements according to the graduate calendar and the specific program, including individual skill requirements if applicable. The ability to read academic material, write research papers, and communicate with the community is essential for students in education or human-focused fields.

6. Tuition for International Students

The 2026–2027 tuition page lists the cost for a new international graduate student taking six courses as CAD 15,789 in tuition and fees. This is an example based on a specific number of courses, not the total cost of an entire Master’s degree. You must verify the number of courses, thesis registration, insurance, and duration; room and board are separate costs.

7. Scholarships and Research Support

MSVU has a scholarships page for graduate students. Those selecting a thesis track should inquire about TA/RA positions and research funding; those in professional/course-based tracks should confirm whether the program offers support or is only eligible for competitive awards.

8. Strengths, Considerations, and Target Audience

MSVU is worth considering for professionals in education, child studies, nutrition, and community services looking to advance their expertise. Check professional certification paths: a graduate degree in nutrition or education does not automatically satisfy all professional registration requirements.

9. Pre-application Preparation

Choose a specific program before comparing budgets. Check intake periods, duration, learning mode (in-person or online), foundational course requirements, and application deadlines. For research tracks, review faculty publications and clarify if you must find a supervisor before applying. Transcripts, diplomas, CVs, statements of intent, letters of recommendation, and language certificates must meet program guidelines; creative fields may require a portfolio. Budget separately for tuition, mandatory fees, insurance, housing, food, transportation, and costs for dependents. Do not include potential income from part-time work or unconfirmed scholarships in your secured budget.

10. Official Sources and Reference Date

Reference date: October 7, 2026. The fees below are provided as information based on the university website; you must confirm the fee schedule applicable to your chosen intake and program. The tuition group on the website is for preliminary comparison and does not replace official university fee assessments.
